Safe family neighborhoods near Disney?

We have sinkholes in PA, too.

I love hearing everyone's stories. I hope to permanently get to Florida soon, too! :goodvibes

I didn't read through all the responses but I would go with Celebration as my first choice and then Clermont.

Update: heading out next week for a quick trip. Will drive through Windermere and possibly celebration. Thanks everyone!

Spent 8 years living in Clermont/Minneola area up by Hwy 50, not South Clermont. Loved the area!!!!! Quick commute to Disney, knew lots of people that worked for them that lived in the area. It has affordable houses, beautiful hills and lakes, great community feel and everything you need right in town. Seriously wouldn't live anywhere else in Florida. They have lots of community activities like Pig on the Pond, annual Christmas Parade, Taste of South Lake etc... They're actually building a splash park downtown by Lake Minneola too & recently purchased a property that serves as a community pool. It's a beautiful area filled with great, friendly people. Only reason we left is because we wanted to be back close to family. But I really did love it there, it's a great place!!!

Is there a certain "section" of Clermont, in particular that's safer? I was just Googling some city data and it showed crime rates in Clermont to be higher, double (or more) than the US average for every year from 2000-2010.

Thanks!! You're referring to that as the "safer" area, right?

Yes. I don't really know of any "unsafe" areas but I certainly feel safe where I live. Clermont is growing fast, so there are areas that are older more established clermont and then there are areas where everything is very recently built including the homes, retail, restaurants. Within the last 5 years.

Thank you! If we have time we will check out Clermont. There have been a couple of people that suggested it.

We are thinking of buying a home with the plan of visiting 3 or 4 times a year and renting it the rest of the year and then eventually moving there.

We want something close enough to to Disney to appeal to renters but a little further out to avoid some of the tourist crowd. I have been looking and I think we want to spend no more than $225,000 but I have seen many homes under $200,000 that appealing.

Would the Clermont area be a good option for this?

Are you talking about short-term rental appeal? The areas in south Clermont would probably be better suited for that, but I don't really know much about the real estate down there. It's a lot closer to Disney than the north side where I live... kind of like two different cities really, with a bunch of orange groves in between

Well, probably short term, but long term rentals would be favorable. I am familiar with the area as my parents used to stay at the Thousand Trails Campsite out there. As I said we figure we would be renting all year(except a few weeks for ourselves) for about 10 years with the plans of moving there around 10 years from now.

Hi! I thought I'd resurrect this thread to ask a question regarding Winter Garden. We are looking at the area and found the shopping center called Winter Garden Village. As far as shopping and dining, this looks like a great section to be in, but I wanted to get input from the pros. Is this a good area to LIVE in? There are quite a few neighborhoods right there, is there any one in particular that's better or worse? We don't see a grocery store in that immediate area, is the Super Target the grocery option unless you drive 5 miles to Publix? Thanks for any input anyone can provide!

I shop in Winter Garden village all the time, and feel safe there. I don't think I would want to live in the area directly around it though. It's getting a little too close to Colonial Dr for me.

Stoneybrook West is a nice, gated golf course community near the Winter Garden Village shopping area. There is a Publix nearby.

I also shop at Winter Garden Village all the time. There is a grocery in the Target. There are some pretty nice neighborhoods near by. A previous poster is correct in that the closer you get to West Colonial (Highway 50), the less desirable it is. But, the neighborhoods to the south and west are quite nice.

Thank you all so much for your replies! We're in the midst of searching and researching as we 'speak.'

ITA...Feralpeg was extremely helpful to me when we were researching the area from out of state!
The supertarget is very convenient, but there is also the Publix 3.5 miles south. We are near that as we are renting short-term in Independence while we build a house in a new development right next door called Orchard Hills (off Tiny road near Bridgewater Middle). They also just broke ground on a new elementary school in Independence.

We moved here 6 weeks ago and we love it!!!!
