We much prefer the early morning safari. We did do a safari near closing and the animals were not moving around much. Even with Everest, I think we will continue to hit the Safari first.
We've done it first thing twice and we saw a lot of animals. I would definitely do it first thing and then if you have time later give it another shot and see how it is. We got fast passess for EE first then went and rode safaris. It worked well.
I've heard that first thing is the best time to do it, but we've always gone on this ride whenever we felt like it, and we saw plenty of animals. I guess it just all depends on how many animals you want to see. If you want to see a lot of them, then go first thing. If it doesn't matter to you, then go when you feel like it.
english rose 47.... you didn't say when you were going to WDW. The animals are normally more active in the morning before the heat of the day during the hotter weather. If you are going in the cooler times of the year they are active a little later. We go in Nov/Dec and the animals seem pretty active until about 1 or 2. Hope this helps.
We love first thing in the morning because the animals tend to still be active and/or at least up and eating rather than lying down hiding and sleeping. However, my family's main priority at AK is to see as many animals as possible. We love AK and go to see animals first, other attractions second. I'm a zookeeper so to me a Disney zoo is the ultimate!
If your group cares more about the attractions than the animals, you'd probably be better off hitting the major rides first and doing the safari later with fastpass.
We had always went early in the morning. This past May we just couldn't get back there until about 2:00 or so. It was hot that day, about 95 degrees, and I was worried about not seeing many animals. We saw more on that safari than on any of the morning safaris.
The earlier you can ride the safari the better, because you never know when that rickety bridge will fall down and close the ride until they can build a new one.
