A US airman has died after setting himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington DC.

The man was identified by police as Aaron Bushnell, 25, of San Antonio, Texas.

Officers from the US Secret Service extinguished the flames before the man was taken to hospital on Sunday afternoon.

Before setting himself on fire, he said he would "no longer be complicit in genocide".

There is no honor in this. Simply untreated mental health issues. Wearing a uniform and performing crazy acts does nor make one sane or a hero. The government accepts tons of nutsos daily.

He must have been severely mentally ill to do this to himself. And for nothing. His death won’t change anything.
I agree that there had to be some untreated mental health issues that contributed to this. I am sorry that he felt that suicide was the only way out. I would much rather people get help when they need it, especially after dealing with two suicides in my friends and family circle.

My husband, father, and grandfather spent 70 + years in the military. This does not represent our Honorable forces and just shows mental illness is prevalent. Prayers to all. But he needed serious help that had nothing to do with the military.

Pretty sure they're assuming it based on his actions.. Not that I agree with doing that, but it seems that's what is happening here.
Buddhist monks have self-immolated as a form of protest. None of them, it seems, were mentally ill. It's scarier to think that he was in his right mind.

From DH....you have something Fing wrong if you light yourself on fire. Not rocket science that mental illness comes into play. I'm just the messenger lol. Signed - from lifelong military member.

Violent acts and killing one's self is a fairly good indicator of a mental illness. History is not immune to people with mental disorders and a lot of mentally ill people hide and excuse themselves within religion.

I don't doubt that he may have had a mental illness. I only wanted to read the source for the speculation, see if maybe the Air Force knew anything about it. That's all.

How would an American service member be directly involved?

Thought US wasn't in this directly so why was he there? Lots of questions.
