If the OP's story is true, what reason is good enough to justify the harm caused by posting what-ifs and maybe's? It's one thing to mull over things in your own mind, quite another to post what-ifs and maybes on a public forum that cast doubt on another's integrity.
I see your point. I'd just hate someone to get scammed in this manner, and perhaps pointing out the possibility of a scam would make anyone who wants to be generous check out the story thoroughly.
I agree, no reason to sling mud on what ifs, but also it's nice to remind people to be aware that there are all sorts of people in the world, not all are sincere.
