sad possibility of canceling trip...

I am very actively looking for a new job and have some interviews in place. My DH and I discussed last night, that if I was to find a new job, get an offer, and the company not let me take my February vacation, then we'll have to sacrifice our trip. I know it sounds like I am counting my chickens before they hatch but just the thought of cancelling our trip makes me sad Thanks for letting me post. I know we can always go, but we have AP's that expire in April and are staying at AKL for a week for under $1000. This will be our first trip staying on-site, we'll never get AP's again probably, and we'll definitely probably never be able to stay at a deluxe for under $1000. Anyone else ever been in this situation? Thanks for letting me post.

First of all . Dh and I are kind of in the same situation. We are currently looking for new jobs and planning to go in January. I don't really see us cancelling the trip, but I guess there is a small possibility. I think depending on the situation, if you are up front with the new company, they will be ok with you going. Just explain it is an already planned trip. Keep in mind, you might not be able to use vacation time yet, I don't know if that is factored in. Good luck with the job hunt!!

That being said. There will always be deals. Under $1,000 for a deluxe will always be attainable in one way or another. Boards like this make sure that happens.

As an ex-Administrator, it is best during your interview process if you are up front and mention that you've had the vacation planned for a while. 9 times out 10 it's not a problem. I've had someone that actually started working one week and then was off on a cruise the second week but they had told me about the plans during the interview process.

good luck in the job hunting. I have had to cancel a trip for financial reasons so I feel your pain there. Actually our last trip was postponed two or three times. We were just there in June but would love to go back in June again. Fingers crossed don't know if that will happen or not. We have set some goals to pay down debt this year so alas we may have to skip.

ONe year I had gotten a job at Kohls Department store for the holidays and they had a policy of no vacation time from the begining of Dec till the first week of the new year and we had a trip to Cancun planned for 12-27 thru 12-30 I brought up the trip at the interview and since we already had the trip planned and paid for they said that was ok that I went.

Usually places are good about trips that you already have planned but I for sure would mention it at the interviews.

I also do interviewing and hiring-the most important thing is to be up front. Don't accept the job and say...Oh by the way we had something planned. Your credibility is then lost right from the start.

I have never not hired someone qualified due to an upcoming vacation/wedding etc.

This is a tough situation. DH was interviewing the first part of this year and I kept telling him he needed to tell prospective employers that we were going on vacation. He refused to discuss it with them during the interview. Great.

He got a great job in March, but he was SOOO timid about the vacation issue I was ready to scream. He wanted to get through his 90 day probation before he even asked about vacation. He wouldn't be allowed to use vacation until he had been there for 6 months, but we needed to know if he was going to be able to get the week we wanted so we could book airfare! He finally got up the courage to approach them about it and it worked out fine, but it would have been better for him to have told them up front.

EVERYBODY that I talked to about this said he should have just told them going in that he had a vacation planned for October and would need a certain week off. Paid or unpaid can be negotiated later, but securing the time off is really important.

Our dates for our next trip are completely up in the air until DH gets the '06 vacation schedule. I may end up having to take the time unpaid, but if that's what happens then oh well! There are worse things than one week without pay.

don't worry, I had a similar situation. We always rent the same cabin in the Adirondacks every year in July, but you have to pay a nonrefundable deposit of 1/2 in January. Well, I got a new job, told them during the interview about this week. So I worked a week and had the next week off for vacation. Employers understand how this type of thing happens and if you are who they're truly looking for, they will let you take it.

Good luck with the job hunt. Just remember, if you can't make this trip you won't be cancelling, you will be postponing. All that will change is your travel dates.

As a Human Resources Manager, I agree completely agree with czycropper. It is not at all unusual for a job candidate to request that they be able to take a pre-planned vacation shortly after starting. I always make sure that I acknowledge such a request in the offer letter. Just make sure that you mention it AFTER you have received the job offer and are discussing salary, benefits, start date, etc.

Being that we plan our vacations 1-2 years in advance, there has *always* been a pre-planned vacation on the books when I have job-interviewed. I have always been up front with it and it has never been a problem. Usually I bring it up at the point they ask "how soon can you start?". I will mention that we have a vacation planned where we have already purchased plane tickets and most everyone will understand about not being able to change that.

Most employers will be understanding unless you are filling a vacancy that absolutely nobody else can cover for (i.e. a 1 or 2 person run business).

Good luck with your job search! We've had our December trip booked since LAST December. Back in June I unexpectedly lost my job. When I started interviewing, I never mentioned anything about my trip on my first interview. I did mention it on the second and it wasn't a problem. My boss is even letting me borrow vacation time so I'll get paid for that week!
