Thank you everyone, esp Sue and Cheshire Figment, for answering my questions about the MK and rental car size. We were supposed to go to WDW this Thursday evening for a week for a conference (my dh's). Sadly, after losing my dad at the beginning of April, we are again in a bad place. My 95 year old grandmother (who lives with my mom) fell last night and is having emergency hip surgery tomorrow (Saturday) at 10:00 a.m. EST. She is said to have a 50/50 chance with the anesthesia and will definitely have serious life threatening emergency complications and be in a lot of pain and not make it more than in the very short term if she is bedridden given her age and other medical conditions. No good choices here. I flew out to be with my mom during the surgery and am of course on line bc I cannot sleep. Please keep my grandmother in your thoughts and prayers, I would really appreciate it. This trip was supposed to be good for my mental health, and now things are just getting worse.

Hey, cupcake, I'm so sorry to hear about your grandmother. I hope everthing goes well for her. I will be praying that she comes through the surgery without any complications. I'm sure your mother appreciates having your support during this trying time. It's normal to be upset when plans don't go as we want them to, but hopefully when your grandmoter is doing better, you can get to take your vacation to Disney. (I'm thinking positive here!!!)

So sorry to hear about your grandmother. I'm sending lots of pixie dust your way and hope everything works out for you and your family.

I have had to cancel our past two trips due to my health, but I'm not giving up and have just booked Third Time Lucky for September. Rember that the good times will come round again even though it all seems bad at the moment.

(((((HUGS))))) to you.

Cupcake, my thoughts & prayers to you & your family ... I know how special grandmothers can be as we become adults. you will have other opportunities to take a vacation.

The cardiologist met with us beforehand and told us again that if we were being cautiously optimistic, she had a 50/50 chance of surviving the surgery. She has congestive heart failure and the last time she had anesthesia, she had an almost fatal complication that had made them say she couldn't have it again, but we had no choice. We saw her this morning before the surgery and she was tiny and sad and in a lot of pain. Now we just have to pull for her to get thru the week (she's at high risk for post-op complications for about a week) and do OK with rehab (she's got mid-level dementia). So far, we could not ask for more.

She wants to hold hands so I bought her a soft teddy at the gift shop and she was cuddling it under her chin with both hands and dozing when she left. She's a trooper. We all cried (including the lovely receptionist who knew my mom from her visits to see my dad when he was at this hospital before he passed away) when the drs came in and said the magic words, "she's awake and alert."

Thank you all for keeping us in your prayers. I cannot tell you how much it means to me.

And on a WDW related note, I have a lot of happy memories of my grandparents and the MK. They lived in FL and we used to drive down every summer from the year the MK opened. We stayed at the Contemporary & the Poly, obviously -- no other parks or resorts then! Our favorite picture of them was taken on the bench by the street off the middle of Main Street by where the barber is, where all the flowers are.

Thanks again for thinking of us.

Cupcake, thanks for the update on your grandmother. Glad to read she survived the surgery, & I will continue to keep you all in my thoughts & prayers.

So good to hear everything went well with the op. My thoughts are with you and I hope your grandmother makes a good recovery.

Hi.. sorry I am late to post.. but best wishes for your grandmothers recovery!

I am./was a PTA.. so if you have any ?'s give me a holler.. pm or email..

If the doc did a hip pinning to the fracture... as her weight bearing will be limited..and that is difficult for some patients with dementia to deal with.. It will be up to staff and family to remind her how much weight she can put on the fractured leg.

If she had a partial hip replacement the weight bearing will be different and an easier adjustment. She will use a walker and be doing a set of exercises with the PT staff. You can ask her therapist which exercises family can help her do. She will also have some restrictions..ie do not cross her legs etc..

As for her pain.. usually by the end of the first week the pain is greatly reduced. She should be wearing TED hose to reduce the risk of blood clots.

I hope you will be able to get some much needed rest.
Best wishes,
Joan

I was out of town without any internet access until now. Just wanted to say how sad I am to hear about your news (thanks for the update). Here's some more Pixie dust for a quick recovery.
