I broke a bone in my foot yesterday. My trip is in about 8 weeks. I go to the orthopedic dr. this week( I was at urgent care last night). I don't think it's really bad b/c at first they thought it was just a sprain. Should I get trip insurance and still plan on going?

I would go....but make sure you get a wheelchair because your foot will hurt. I broke my heel a few years ago and went to Disney a couple of times in a wheelchair, it's still fun!! :thumbsup2

There is a link in my signature to the disABILITIES FAQs thread. In post #2, you will find information about renting wheelchairs and ECVs.

By 8 weeks from now, you might be good for short distances, but not up to a whole day of walking. If you don't think you will need one, I'd still suggest taking the phone numbers for one or 2 of the companies with you in case you change your mind once you are there.

I remember breaking my foot when I was 10/11 yrs old about 4-5 weeks before our family's vacation to Disney (this was some years ago) and when one of my older sisters yells our "WHAT?!?! What about disney?" Now, you should know that I'm the youngest of 5 kids and that particular sister was at the time at least 26 yrs old and that was her first response :lmao: Sisters! gotta love 'em!

I remember getting that darn cast off the day before our vacation, my parents never even considered canceling the trip. If I still had to wear the darn thing well I was just gonna have to wear it and get pushed around in a wheelchair. I never remember complaining or being in pain the entire trip.

I'm sure me being so young when this happened and when you're young your bones tend to mend faster than when they do as you get older but I would think that if it's not a bad break 8wks would be enough time and at best you'll have to take plenty of breaks to rest up a bit or perhaps schedule 1-2 non-park days to make sure you're not pushing yourself.

Good Luck.
T.

I think it depends on where your foot was broken on how well you'll manage. Last summer I broke 2 of my toes and was given crutches and an air cast. My biggest challenge was finding shoes the fit after I was mostly healed, I think it took a good 8 months till my old ones fit back on that foot. Anyhow after the first 2-3 weeks my foot was feeling pretty good, by 6 weeks I was getting around just fine, it was the shoe issue that was the hardest to deal with. If you could get an air cast and have that on stand by just in case you may do better than you think. I definitely wouldn't cancel the trip.

I would still go.
5 yrs ago my mom broke her foot 2 weeks before we were leaving for disney. We still went. It was definltey a different trip than it would have been but it was still fun. Luckily my mom doesnt liek a lot of the rides so it wasnt as much of a problem. I will say, that all this happened before i knew about the DIS and it definiltye would have gone smoother with all the information on here but we still had fun

This is what we did....
We ended up renting a car which turned out to be great...the few times we used the busses were a pain
We brought crutches with us in a ddition to rentign a wheelchair
Request a first floor room if possible.....we were staying at CSR and we called two weeks before a trip adn requested a first floor room adn explained why adn we got one

Al in all, its most likely goin gto be a different trip than you thought it would be, but it will still be fun.
Go and have fun!!

I don't want to go with a cast on. I guess I will keep the air tickets since it would cost too much to change. We ended up paying only $291 for all four. I just don't know if I should keep my package at CBR. The $ is due May 9th. We are also going to Sea World. Maybe we should stay offsite?
I know I'm really nervous, but I guess I will find out from the Dr. this week how my recovery will be.

Check with Dr.; they may have a suggestion for extra support after the cast comes off. You still will not be doing the walking you normally would. I'd still go. Maybe you take it easy more than normal. Maybe you upgrade your tickets to no expiration, and hang out by the pool more. Then you are ready to go back!
Do check out the DISabilities; they have tons of great info.
I had friends with two small boys and dad unexpectedly in a wheelchair, and they still said it was a great trip.

Sorry to hear about your broken foot. My son was in a cast for 8 weeks with a broken leg. Since his ankle did not move for all of that time, it was quite stiff when the cast was removed. It took a few days to be able to put a slight amount of weight on the ankle (it was a tib/fib break...not his ankle) and it took him almost 2 weeks to walk short distances without crutches or a cane. At 2 weeks, 2 days he had an academic competition and was on his feet quite a bit. His foot and ankle were swollen for 2 days.

All of this is fresh in my mind since it has only been 2 1/2 weeks since his cast was removed.

I would still go as well! Disney is VERY accomodating to those with injuries or disabilities. I would not change your onsite reservations! Perhaps just skip Seaworld for this trip if you are worried about getting to that park from Disney.

I broke my foot a couple years ago and I'm pretty sure they gave me the all clear to start running again after 6 weeks (that didn't feel so good though), so I think you'd be fine at Disney at 8 weeks (of course, depends on severity of break, etc.). You'll want to wear good shoes, take anti-inflammatories daily, and ice a couple times a day. Time in the pool will also help a lot. I had a support sandal thingy they gave me to wear that was horribly ugly, but it really did make it not hurt when I walked. I'd probably consider wearing that to Disney if I was going that close to the time of injury.

I'll admit it still hurts occasionally to this day though. I doubt it will ever be perfect. I think it depends on where you break it though. Shoe choice will now be the most important thing in the world to you. And probably a lot of shoes you owned pre-break won't be comfortable anymore. I have to have a really firm sole so that my foot doesn't flex overly much - and the arch has to be just in the right spot. If it's too far forward, it puts pressure on the break spot.

I have a very small hairline fracture in my left foot along with severe tendonitis. We considered cancelling our trip, but decided after the year we have had we NEED this trip. I wear a surgical shoe along with an ace bandage (my fracture is on the outer part of my foot). Dr says the fracture in my case is not the biggest problem its the tendonitis. I cannot move my toes or my foot at all and the anti-inflammatory is not working. I will have to goto physical therapy, not sure when though! My take on this trip it will be a more relaxed trip, I plan on renting a ECV if I need it.

Good luck, feel better!!!

Sorry to hear that, good luck in healing up!

As was mentioned, you won't qualify for trip insurance as you have a pre-existing condition, plus, I believe it's too close to trip anyway to purchase insurance.

Best of luck to you, Tiger

Thanks for the info on trip insurance. We've never had it , so I didn't know how it worked.
I don't think the break is that bad and it is also on the outside of my foot. Last night I had no pain while sleeping and today it is so much better than yesterday. Hopefully it will heal quickly. I will let everyone know what the Dr. says tomorrow.

Well, I went to the Dr. today and have a walking cast on it, although I cannot put any wait on it. I have to have an MRI next tues. and maybe then surgery if there is damage in the joints or other parts of my foot. So far there is just one broken bone. I will put off cancelling any of the trip, and just wait and see what happens. Having the MRI postpones when I will have a cast put on too. That just drags this on.

Disney is totally doable with a cast. I ruptured my achilles 8 weeks before my last trip. Had surgery 6.5 weeks before we left.
I was devastated, but I rented a scooter, got a cast cover for rain, and a crutch holder to hold my crutches on the back of the scooter.
I really was set. I got around with no trouble. Got ahead in quite a few lines too. I used the crutches for around the hotel room and to get from scooter to rides.

DON'T CANCEL!!!

As a natural born klutz, I have been at the mercy of wheelchairs and ECVs most of my young life and as long as I could rent one of the prior mentioned items, there is nothing that would stop me from going somewhere. I attempted to do DL 2 weeks after minor knee surgery but ended up renting a chair... it made things SO much easier and I had a blast on the trip!

Don't canel your trip because of a broken bone! Make sure to stay off your foot as much as possible beforehand and during the trip. Make sure to keep it elevated! Also, depending on where you stay, get a couple bags of frozen peas and keep them in your room fridge, that way you'll have an ice pack ready for when you come home from the parks. They work well in a pinch and stay cool for a long time, just remember to toss them after a couple of days as they can start to smell!

Disney is great about injuries! We went to Epcot last week and DH rented a scooter right there (also because of his foot.) Cast members were very helpful, and he found it easy to use. You can definitely still go! Knowing as far in advance as you do, I would check out the disabilities board and ask people which rides you go up the regular line in, which have seperate entrances, etc. (For instance, Spaceship Earth and Turtle Talk sent us a different way than the regular line, but for Test Track, they had him drive it up through the normal line with all the displays.) Good luck, and have a great time!
