My MIL just called. My dh's cousin fell off her horse over the weekend and lost every memory of the last 5 years. She doesn't have a clue as to who her husband is or anything. They don't know if she will eventually get them back or not.

Yeah, me too. I wonder how the brain decides how much of your memory to erase? Why 5 years and not say 10 or 35 years or 15 minutes? My thoughts are certainly with you and your family.

Yes, it is a fascinating and very scary thing. I think that different parts of the brain stores the different types of memory, so one part could have an injury and affect certain types of memory and other parts be fine.

Hopefully she will make a full recovery quickly!

This actually happened to some friends of mine--they ended up writing a book and making a bunch of tv appearances. She completely lost all memories of her husband & marriage. They're doing great now but she never did regain the memories.

I'm so sorry about your cousin. I hope all goes well for you and your family.
