I don't know how much this will help because it's just my subjective observation but......
I used to work with college kids with physical illnesses fairly often. I found that kids who had to live with the challenge of
managing a chronic illness like diabetes or hemophilia were often stronger and less judgemental of others than other kids their age. They tend to have a perspective on what's important and what is not. They seem to take less things for granted than other kids might and to be much more tolerant of the differences of others. What I mean is that these are not the kids who are picking on others because of their lack of sports ability or their struggles with math.
I know you would not have chosen this challenge for your DS but it is one that can be medically managed and it may offer him a view of the world that will make him a bigger, better person.
