So we were at the Dollar Spot at Target last night, and they had all these Princess lunch bag, sandwich boxes, printed ziplocs, water bottles etc. She is so excited about eating lunch at school next year in 1st grade!

So I chirp, "Look here, honey. PRINCESS princess: lunch boxes and drink bottles!! Ooooo!!" and she says, "Oh, Mom. I'm not going to bring PRINCESS stuff to school in 1st GRADE!!! Everyone will think I'm a BABY."

WAAAAA!!!!!:sad1: :sad1: :sad1:

I was ambivalent about our trip this year during Free Dining, trying to save money and go next year. Now, I am DEFINITELY taking her to Princess StoryBook Lunch one last time before she decides she is too "big" for it. Sniff, sniff...

I know just what you mean! My dd8 is way past 'princess' stuff, and hannah and high school musical stuff just doesn't really feel 'disney' to me, even though they're sold in the disney store. I love to get the kids gifts for our disney trips, so I asked dd if she'd consider anything tinkerbell for the trip, and she said only "inside" the hotel room (like tink pj's would be ok, but not a tink shirt to wear in the parks). It's so sad!!!

You know whats great though? You get it all back once they are out of high school! Characters like Ariel, Belle and Jasmine come back to them as they finally see what great characters and memories they were. Characters like Hannah Montana die off, never to return, just a flash in the pan. So be grateful that when she's 20 and you gals are in the Magic Kingdom, you'll see her face light up again as she says "Mom, take my picture with Ariel!!"

I'm glad i'm not alone. DD(9) isnt into princess stuff, hannah or high school musical. She too cool i guess.Kids are growing up to fast. She doesnt even want to go to that botique where they do your hair and stuff. I might be able to get her to wear some tank tops if they are cute but not babish. What can we do?

Yup you get the princesses back once they are in high school. My dd14's best friend loves the princesses. There is another thread on here where we talk about how miserable teenagers can be, but when they are in a good mood it is the best!! They are like little kids again. My dd6 went thru this in the beginning of 1st this year, but by the end she was less afraid of looking like a baby:goodvibes

dd14's best friend also went with us for my youngests bday party at LibbyLu last year and got the works! Now my daughter no! I think her friend is more secure in herself to look silly.

On a slightly different but related note, DS has decided that after 3 years of "Pirates are awesome!", he does not like pirates anymore. FWIW, he is now a Star Wars fanatic.
DD, however is still a princess fan.

Thank goodness that your DD isn't in my first grade class because she would get mickey and gang all over the place. They are on bulletin boards, my desk, room decorations, picture frames in the room, etc.... I can understand her feelings at this point but I think that she will be surprised once she gets to school. Does that make me an overgrown Mouseketeer??? :rotfl2:

OP, I know how you feel. When we were making plans to go to P & PP this past April, I asked DD8 which princess she wanted to be for the party. She said, "Mom, I don't want to be a princess. I want to be a pirate." :sad1: I have to admit, it was cute to see how happy DD was to wear her Elizabeth Swann costume (and how star-struck she was when she met Jack Sparrow). But I'll always miss those little-girl princess days...

Oh, yes - - it is very sad. And the conspiratorial whisper she was using in Target's Dollar Spot was the WORST! It was as if she didn't even want to be seen standing next to me saying the words "Disney Princesses"!! It was as if I suggested she take a pacifier or a bottle into 1st grade!

Big sigh. Like I said, we are definitely going to WDW this summer to enjoy the last little bit of fairy dust before it's all gone back into *poof* a pumpkin.

It may come back even sooner, sometimes it does in middle school. My DD13 never really lost her love for princesses, but it did greatly decrease after first grade. My second grade she was into tinkerbelle, but by third grade she wasn't even into her. Then by sixth or seventh grade she got right back into it, she now has folders, pencils and everything! ;)

My youngest DD, now 10, who was totally into any pink, frilly and princess-related, decided at the ripe old age of eight, that she was no longer having anything to do with pink or princesses. It was quite interesting - because about 97% of her wardrobe, was pink and/ or princessy.

However, she will make an exception for Tink! But it can't be anything babyish, and it must be semi-subtle. Of course, she might be influenced by her "totally cool big sister" (aged 16) who is into Tink. The other big sister (also 16, not a twin - blended family) is a bit more tomboyish - Pirates of the Caribbean. Had to draw the line at the "My Boyfriend Is a Pirate" T-shirt last year, though! LOL!

It's funny how the kids grow thru these phases! I find it very amusing to see 16 and 18 year old girls, proudly toting Disney character backpacks to school!

DD is 7yo and in between first and second grade.

I did see a decrease in her interest in princesses this year..but only publicly..and only in the last half of the school year.

We went to WDW in December and have quite the tshirt collection for her and she was a bit on the reluctant side to wear any of them the last few months. Since school ended a few weeks ago, she's been wearing princess stuff all the time.

It is definitely based on what the children around her will "think" of her. During the school year she is in an after school program w/ kids up through 5th grade so I think she feels she won't be "cool" w/ them.

During the summer she's in the older group at her old day care center's "summer camp."

We are going down for a girls only trip in a few weeks and we both will be wearing a good bit of princess and minnie mouse themed clothing. Heck I'm 40yo and still wearing princess shirts!princess:

That's why we're doing BBB and I'm spending a fortune. My DD10 doesn't wear too much pink or princess at home, but still wants to wear it at WDW. She saw the pictures of other girls at BBB and said, "OH Mama, I want to do that please!!!!!!!!!!!" I was so excited that she would still dress up and be a princess that I've planned our entire trip around the BBB reservation.

I have a soon to be 8 yr old DS. Luckily he is still wearing his Meet The Robinsons tee and he has a few WDW Mickey tees. But they have to be cool-looking. He wears them mostly in summer. He is an old fashion kid, he loves classic Mickey cartoons. His 2nd grade teacher decorates her classroom in Mickey and Minnie. Oh yes Phineas and Ferb too. I just bought a boy's summer tee at the Disney Outlet store with Goofy and Mickey with a jeep and surfboards(for our WDW trip next summer) Only $5.

My 7 year old (going into 2nd) still likes princess...but talks about people making fun of her....she's the only one in her 1st grade class that will still wear princess t-shirts.

I work part time as a TA...a client was asking my opinion about when to take his kids to WDW...the princess thing came up...that he'd prob. want to take dd before she turns 7 and might loose the "magic" of seeing the princesses.

too sad!

this is sad. i see it with my ds too. the kids all grow up too fast. many of his classmates have older siblings so that factors in. i know ds#2 will grow up faster than our first.
but i also see it being the parents sometimes. our friends oldest child, a 7yo girl, has been obsessed with boys since she was 4-5 yrs old. but they let her hang out with 10-13 yo all the time, let her watch all the "preteen shows" (zach/cody,etc). heck, at 5 yo they even let her hang boys posters on her wall! now shes 7 and they wonder why she wont do ANYTHING but watch tv and talk with her friends. she will NOT play with toys of any kind.
i understand girls grow up faster than boys they say, and that the girl "cliques" can be brutal, but lets not force them either. kwim?

My 7yo DD started out first grade still into the princesses. Now she was however already into HSM and Hannah also. But the love of princesses died quickly. She even recognized it herself and would comment at how she was not as interested in them but really into music now like HSM and HM.

She had a princess bedroom that she has redecorated this year with HSM and HM posters!!!!

However she still LOVES to do BBB and wear pretty dresses, just not ones with a picture of any princesses!!! And it blew me over when I asked her about meals she wanted to do for our Nov. WDW and she tells me she'd like to eat in the castle!!!!! I think at WDW she allows herself to like the princesses even though at home with her friends she would never admit it!!

My DD (6) isn't so much into princesses but will wear anything I ask her to. She's not into Hanna Montana or anything like that yet. She hasn't even seen HSM. Yes I'm a bad mom..LOL, but I have noticed that she dresses babyish compared to her classmates. I just don't think she needs sandals with heels, and short skirts yet..:lmao:

I remember when I was in second grade, and I lost an interest in my Care Bears. But now, I'm right back into publicly loving them, right along with my Disney characters!

Its funny how we let our peers run our likes, isn't it?
