Hey all, my family and I went to the new Jungle Skipper Canteen over our Christmas trip and since it's new I thought people might be interested in hearing our thoughts on the experience. I just wrote a big review of our meal over on my blog if you want some more detailed thoughts about it & pictures!

In a nutshell: the food was meh and the prices were WOW, put together we weren't thrilled.

The Falafel appetizer ($8) we had was one of the best things I've had in Disney, but then no one loved their entree and everyone was dismayed by the portion sizes. My Rice Noodle Bowl ($20) was the worst offender, coming from a die hard pho lover, there were more raw herbs than broth which is a pretty serious pho-ffense! The hubby ordered mac & cheese ($19) but it was more casserole like than cheesy, littler little sis liked the pork ($23) (although she was scared of the color at first!) but didn't like the veg, and bigger little sis struggled mightily to find something she'd like and settled on the chicken ($23) but subbed in plain white rice. 4 entrees, 1 appetizer, and 1 soda later we were $110 out and ended up eating mickey bars to hold us over until dinner (not the worst fate but still not what we hoped for).

Putting aside our disappointment with the food and the prices (because maybe they'll get more in line with time), you have a limited number of food options on your vacation and our thinking is that this just isn't worth the belly space lol!

Side note: I'm gluten intolerant, my family is not. However, pho is a gluten free dish on its own so I don't think having an allergy meal had any effect on the preparation/quality of the food.

That's too bad hear. So many people had high hopes for that venue. It may have been an off day for the food, but that's not an off day for prices, sadly. My friend and I were super excited to try it when it opened, but sadly the menus do nothing for us or our spouses. I will definitely pop in to see the location, but won't be staying for the fare.

Thanks..... I read the menu, and as fellow pho fan:rotfl2: I was horrified by the price..... for pho!!!

I know! I'll be totally honest, some of the best pho I've ever had is from a place at the King of Prussia mall (having a mega mall is perk of living in philly!). I hate to admit liking mall food that much but it's perfect! haha

thanks for that review...like the others have said..they were hoping for some great food ..but prices are outside the box...thanks again

Thanks for posting. We skipped it ;) on our recent trip, put off by not being able to reserve and the TIW exclusion. Sounds like we didn't miss much. I did not know the falafel was gluten free, however. Maybe we will try that one day, just to see the theming!

After no ADRs, looking at menu, no TiW...combined with the fact that although we aren't yearly visitors (we did get APs this year, but generally we go several years between), I figure there are other places.
I do hope they get it together. It seems like a nice option for people who go so much that they don't plan, people who forget to plan, or people who don't like to plan

I admit that I have never had Pho before but I really, really liked the noodle bowl at Skippers. I did pull out about 1/2 of the herbs as I thought they were too strong. It was possibly my favorite thing that I had in Disney last trip. DH had the falafel which we all enjoyed and DS'GF had the mac & cheese knowing it was not traditional. She enjoyed it. I wasn't a fan. I would go back for the noodle bowl alone. No entrees for us. We did share a couple of desserts that we enjoyed as well.

Agreed that it was pricey. I was very happy to try it. No a must do every trip but I do hope to go back.

That is really the way Pho is served in Vietnam. Large amounts of herbs for the flavor, take out what you don't want to eat after it has infused.

I like the way they serve it at places here... bowls of toppings and you toss in what you want. I'm going to have to try it at least once... I love the Jungle Cruise beyond all reason. :)
