S/O - Do you see the point in owning a Rolex?

Got these three today for £30. They tell the time, fit nice, look sweet and can be colour coordinated to whatever you're wearing. Some of my typical go-to watches now. Point is, you don't need to spend a fortune to own a nice watch.

Nice :thumbsup2:thumbsup2 Enjoy

As I said, you'd get mugged, flashing around a nice Louis Moinet in a bar.

History can be a convincing factor regarding a Fine Watch purchase as for myself I would opt for a Brequet above all others because his was The FIRST.

*It wasn’t until 1810, historical records indicate, that a watchmaker designed a watch from the ground up to be worn on the wrist, as opposed to a piece of jewelry with a timekeeping element added as an enhancement. The watchmaker, appropriately, was the legendary Breguet, and the client who commissioned it was Queen Caroline Murat of Naples (above), the sister of perhaps the most famous of Breguet’s roster of royal clients, Napoleon Bonaparte. That watch, known in records as No. 2639 and delivered in 1812, was oval-shaped, with a silver dial hosting elaborately curved Arabic numerals; it contained a movement with complications including a chiming repeater, and was attached to a wristlet made of hairs and golden threads. Now unfortunately lost to history, Queen Caroline’s watch proved to be a trendsetter for its times, inspiring Breguet and many of his contemporaries to produce elegantly appointed, wrist-mounted timepieces for aristocrats, royalty, and other women of means throughout the 1800s, eventually making them more accessible to the public by the end of the century. The original watch’s spirit and many of its noteworthy design elements live on in the modern Breguet Reine de Naples collection......"

There are a lot of things I don't see a point in owning, watches in general being one of them, Rolex or Timex, don't make sense to me, when I already have a clock on my phone.

But I have no issue with others wanting or owning those things, watches included.

Some are lovely, in particular, the mens chocolate dial. Women tend to have a number of accessories to dress up and down but men generally have two things going on which are shoes and a watch. I get men liking a nice watch and nice shoes, it doesn't need to be an expensive Rolex or above but something with a little bit of pizzazz is a nice touch for a special occasion.

I have one that looks like this. The picture is not of my arm (forgot to put it on today). I would never have bought it for myself but it was a 25 year with the company gift. Until that point I hadn't worn a watch in probably 30 years. I do try to wear it everyday as I have gotten use to it. Not heavy or bulky.

To me it's no different than any other kind of jewelry, something I'm just not particularly interested in owning. At least it has a purpose. I'd wear one on occasion for sentimental reasons if I inherited it.

Hey, if it brings you pleasure, go for it!

Nope. I’d much rather spend all my cash on Disney parks and traveling. Experiences just matter more to me. Right now, we’re actually in touch with super com, planning out our next vacation. It’s exciting! Honestly, it doesn’t matter if you have a Rolex on your wrist or not when you’re camping in South Africa or walking the streets of Sydney — those kinds of moments make you feel rich in a completely different way. It’s the memories, the adventures, the people you meet — that’s what stays with you

Just to prove a point, a cheap provider of budget watches I use set up a shop in LAX and charged up to $600 per watch. People thought they looked so good, they were taken in and splashed the cash. People were queueing up in the airport! They even made comments like "You can feel the quality" and "This is the best watch I have ever owned"!

So… be careful what you buy!

Watches like these… mine cost £60.

So I am NOT a person into high end anything. I don't have fancy purses, or clothes. I mostly wear sweatpants and life is good t-shirts. I don't even wear my wedding rings (just a silicone ring I got off amazon in a 10 pack for $5). I never wear jewelry and I am pretty frugal. That said, I wear a Rolex every day. It is not a fancy one (no diamonds etc), just plain black face and silver band and it is 22 years old. My husband bought it for me when I was pregnant with my oldest son. I had just had our daughter not even a year before and I always wore an old Swiss Army watch that broke. I had mentioned in passing that I needed a new watch, because I am one of those people who can't live without a watch. I don't want to look at my phone, I like to see the time and I need one for work (RN). So he surprised me and had it engraved. On the back it says "For the best mom 2003". It never needs batteries, works off motion, so I love it and have worn it ever since. It is the only fancy thing I own and my husband never bought me jewelry again. :rotfl2:Well, not entirely true, he did buy me a pretty band when I was pregnant with our twins because my hands swelled so much I couldn't wear my wedding rings and I was worried about what people thought of me. Today, I wouldn't care, but back then I was worried I looked young and pregnant with two other littles and IDK, I cared more about what people thought back then. But other than that, he knows me and buys me Disney things. Lol.

Anyway, so yeah, I have one, I love it, and it will probably be the only watch I will ever need for the rest of my life.

ETA: I don't even think people would know it is a Rolex and I never notice other people's watches unless they are honking huge. So not everyone wears them for status IMO. I can see if I can upload a photo of mine.

I'd say that's a rather lovely watch. And given the history and tale behind it, makes it very valuable :)

About 20 years ago DH really wanted the Rolex Submariner. We were in our early 20's and no way we could afford it. He's always loved that watch and I figured at some point, he'd start tasking about getting it. Last year his 6 year old Garmin was starting to die so we had to buy him a new one, $1200 for that. I then said something about him always wanting a Rolex and he must've dropped that idea. Yep, he said he couldn't give up his Garmin now. So whew, glad that is a closed conversation.

I just googled the current price on that watch. They have 3 and I don't know the difference between them. Cheapest is $9,200 and most expensive is $17k. In reality, while I wouldn't want to spend that much on a watch and value experiences more, I'm sure many folks are spending $9,200 on one trip to Disney. 8-)

I love watches with a story behind them :) Or some kind of emotional attachment. Bling for the sake of bling or money for the sake of money just doesn't resonate with me.
