Ruth's Chris Steak House

I am really glad this thread was posted. DH and I cashed in our Visa Extras rewards for $50 in GC for this restaurant. We planned on going in Orlando for our anniversary. I didn't realize it is so expensive. I was figuring like $100 for dinner for the two of us.

I would have been really shocked otherwise, so thank you OP.

I agree with disneysteve. you can get away with close to $100 but only if you are not drinking wine or other alcoholic beverages with or before dinner. to me the petite fillets are plenty as I am not used to eating huge steaks. they are so rich that I couldnt even finish mine. I havent been in awhile but I remember LOVING  the au gratin potatoes, completely to die for! plenty enough to share! I would say a couple salads, 2 petite fillets & a starch would be plenty enough to fill you up & then possibly a dessert.

I didnt see it mentioned on any of the posts, but the several times I've been to the one in Jacksonville & Ponte Vedra, I have never seen kids or even teens and it was an adult only atmosphere.

I just went to the NY, NY one last week. A good friend on mine is a Dr and had a conference. I tagged along with three other Dr's. The just went on and on about this place. The meal was 88 for me before tip, 8 potato, 12 for 2 beers and 44 for a 12 oz steak. I ordered MR and it was well.

Frankly I was not impressed at all. I didn't say anything because they all loved it and I didn't want to be a party pooper.

On the other hand I am from Iowa and am used to very good meat. If I want a steak I will grill my own for 7 bucks a pound.

DH is an Iowa farm boy and we raise our own beef in Montana. We have never had beef in a restaurant or from a grocery store that matches ours in flavor. And, clearly, we aren't charging enough! :rotfl2:

My husband and I had our anniversary dinner there last year. The food is delicious ;) I am not a steak eater but I did taste my husbands, it was the beat steak I've ever tasted. The service was excellent. I bill was over 100.00 but well worth it to me. They gave us each a complimentary dessert since it was our anniversary.

Yes, I could have just as easily said to figure on at least $100 per person. But I was thinking of a very old joke when a person asked J.P. Morgan about the cost of upkeep on a yacht, and his response was if you have to ask you can't afford it.

Maybe I should have put some smilies in my post.

But, as a general rule, most people who eat at a restaurant at such a level tend to not worry about the prices. And most of those who worry about cost will very rarely, if ever, eat in such a restaurant.

But this is the BUDGET board and if the OP wants to BUDGET for a special meal at a nice restaurant then the question was entirely appropriate.

It may have been meant as a joke but it came across to some here as a put down that the OP had no business eating there.

My 19-year-old DD wants to take me there for my birthday/Mother's Day. She said she can't afford to pay for the whole family so she wants to take just me. I don't really want her to; I would feel bad about how much money she was spending on me and probably wouldn't enjoy it knowing it was costing her so much. She's only 19!! I don't want to hurt her feelings by refusing her offer, but I also don't want her to be spending that much money to take me out!

I may be the voice of dissent, but I did not like it at all. We have eaten at two different ones. The one we ate at in Cancun I got violently ill. I'm thinking maybe it's the pound of butter they put on the steaks:scared: Then we ate at one in NYC and asked for no butter and still was not impressed. We prefer Mortons when looking to pay high prices for steak;)

:confused3 It's a popular saying: "If you need to ask you can't afford it!" That was my first response when I read the OP. I don't think it was meant in a mean way, especially by Cheshire Figment.
Glad to see you post that you knew what it meant robinb. I was beginning to think that only we more more "mature" posters (me and CF) had ever heard of that phrase. (but you are younger)

I agree, it really is a very, very common saying that isn't mean to be demeaning at all. It's sort of like saying that something costs "an arm and a leg". Would someone really take it literally and think that they were going to have to donate body parts?:goodvibes

I've been to Ruth's Chris in New Orleans and San Francisco. Mostly when one of my friends really wanted a steak. I never disliked it, but there are so many really terrific restaurants in SF and NO that I wasn't just thrilled by it either.

Hmmm... I think most people have heard of the phrase before. I just think some people just thought it was a little snarky.

Ruth's was pretty good. Emeril's - I don't think I would ever go there again definitely not worth it - good thing we were there with great people.

I agree with both of you being a born and raised farm girl. I NEVER order a steak at a restuarant. I know my meat at home is 100 times better!! I usually splurge on seafood. hehehe

We love Ruth's Chris. It started out as a special occasion meal for us but then we ended up going once a month! I am not that big on steak but DH loves the stuff. I always get the twin petite filets with shrimp. I eat the shrimp and give DH the steaks. He also gets his own so he definitely gets his fill of red meat! The creme brulee is to die for! We always spend around $200 or so per meal. We aren't wine drinkers but do have a beer or two each with our meal. We took our inlaws there for my BILs 40th birthday and the tab came to just over $500 not including tip. They had some wine with their meal too. I have nothing bad to say about the place. Worth every penny.

We loooove Ruth Chris. Our local one has private booths, where you have the doors closed to your booth, and you are in your own little world for 2 hours. Even have your own private TV and AC thermostat. Just DH and I, for 2 hours, it is heaven on earth.

That being said, we always share sides. The Creamed spinach is to die for. We always get a bottle of wine, but if we held the wine, we could easily walk out for $120 with tip. The service is always excellent.

We go once a year, on our anniversary. It really is all about the experience, and enjoying wonderful food that happens to be expensive. For people that cannot enjoy food knowing how much it costs, I would not recommend this place. (there is nothing wrong with being this way, but if I was on a tight budget there, I would not enjoy my meal)
