My wife is registered to fun the WDW half marathon January 2009. She has to have knee surgery and won't be able to do the run. She brought up the idea that I could run in her place! We're both female, so I'm wondering if I could just use her bib, or is there a way legally transfer her registration to me. We are in different age categories, I'm 38 and she's 49. I don't know if that makes a difference.

Also, although I'm in good shape, (although 10-15lbs over weight) I'm not a runner. Is it realistic for me to be able to train to finish the half marathon in 4 months? I'm a belly dancer and take dance class for a couple hours, 2x a week, plus I do the elliptical trainer for 30 minutes 3x a week, weight lift with a personal trainer 2x a week and hike in the hills with my dog for an hour on the weekends.
I started running in the hills yesterday and was able to run for 5 minute segments with a 1 minute fast walk in between.

Is there a training program that would get me ready for the half marathon? I'm really excited about possibly running my first marathon!

Thanks for all the help!

As far as I know, there is no way to transfer the number. As for running with her number, well, I know it has been done.

Training plans? I would pick up Marathoning for Mortals by John Bingham and take a look at his plans to find the right fit. I would also start training right away. You can do it, but be careful because you risk injury jumping into distance running so fast.

Good Luck.

There is no way to transfer the registration. They don't do that.
She could put off the race for this year and postpone the registration for the next year. I have heard of other people doing races for others. You would need to somehow get her stuff at the expo. If she could pick it up, or you would need a letter and copy of her id or something. Their is a way for someone else to pick up others racers packet - just don't know the steps.

As far as completing it, should be no problem for you as far as I can see. I am a walker and finish the Half with some time to spare.

Good Luck to you, Tracy

Thanks for the info and encouragement! My wife will be with me at WDW, so we can go together to pick up her/my stuff at the Expo. So, that won't be a problem. She's actualy quite happy that I'll be running for her. Next year, if her knees are ok, we may be running together.

That's great to know that even if I walk, I should probably be able to finish in plenty of time. I'll probably alternate running and walking and see how that goes. Thanks for the book recommendation. I'll be sure to check it out!
