One of the doctors I work with is running Tinkerbell half with me, kindof. ;)

I am training with galloway and doing 30:30 intervals so I have his timer I use.

The doc on the other hand runs 0.25 mile then walks 0.25 mile as a general rule. She has done all her training on the treadmill so has something to let her know when she hits that quarter mile. She did do an outside run on Christmas day as her gym was closed. I have encouraged her to do more outside runs to get a better idea of real life runs.

She asked me yesterday about how the course is set up. I told her I thought there were mile marks that had the time on them, from looking at last years videos. She was hoping that there would be half and quarter markers as well. I am pretty sure that is not true.

She doesn't want to use a timer like I do because here walk is slower than her run so time would not be even for her.

Any suggestions for her. I am sure there are smart phone apps out there that would help her but since I own a dumbphone I am at a loss on suggestions to help her.

So I come to all the experts here for help. :worship: Thanks for any help you can send her way.

I use MapMyRun app on my phone. You can program it to alert you at any point you want.

You can set some garmin watches up to intervals of distances rather than time. A running store should be able to help

Also runmeter and runkeeper. Runkeeper is quite easy to use and would be a cinch to do .25 intervals. Runmeter can do much more complex stuff (distance, then time, then distance for example) but is a bit harder to program. RK is available for both iphone and android, though I've heard the GPS accuracy can vary based on the android hardware. I hope you both have a great race!

Runkeeper calls out splits at distances with a quarter mile being the smallest.

Though, I would look to the Garmin. The 610 has the ability to beep splits at distances or time. It has a run/walk alarm that will beep at any time interval you can dream up.

You are correct about Disney having mile markers only... the markers are set per the course certification so they are fairly accurate.

I've used Runkeeper on my iPhone a lot. I was using it exclusively, until I bought a Garmin GPS watch earlier this year on Ebay with my Birthday cash :thumbsup2

I used Runkeeper for the WDW half this year and it did fine. The mileage accuracy was pretty decent and the voice prompts can be set up MANY different ways. A reminder that if you DO use an iPhone app, make sure to put the screen to sleep, or else it will drain the battery QUICKLY.

I also will only run with one ear bud in when I'm using my iPhone or iPod, as I want to make sure to be able to hear things going on around me.

I was thinking of using the Runkeeper Live portion for the next half, where you can let people track you live.

The LIVE or pro version works well... well most of the time. As long as your spectators allow for a little delay, it is a great tool. I tell them to start looking for me when I am a quarter to half mile out from where they are.

For those wanting to use a phone app such as runkeeper, you can easily run the entire marathon with the app on BUT you need to shut off the 3g/4g and wifi antennas. The phone will work on cell only and well, you really should not be looking at the web and running a race anyway. Seriously, my batteries only deplete 40% when I shut these antennas off on a marathon.

Thank you for that. I have been trying to figure out how to make it 26.2 without my phone dying. I even bought a moxie to extend the battery, but it is heavy

Need the phone for my Nike+ and my camera. Have a Galloway timer for my intervals. I was used Seconds Pro, which worked great, but again drain the battery big time.

To add to this on the Garmin 610 - you can also set it to vibrate rather than beep. I have mine set to vibrate for my run/walk intervals which are time based and for distance splits. You can set these intervals however you desire I LOVE the vibration in big races where a lot of things are beeping on other runners. Keeps me focused on mime and not someone else's. LOL.

I forgot about that... I remember one of my first races when the Timex IM was one of the only options for a timer that was continuous with multiple countdowns. At about 3 minutes past the start a third of the runners stopped running, about half of those folks restarted almost immediately as they were fooled by someone else's watch.

My 610 is set for both vibrate and alarm. I do not always feel the vibrations.
