Running a marathon undertrained/injured

Running a marathon injured and under trained are very different. I would defer in your position.

Thanks, everyone. I really appreciate everyone's perspectives. I am leaning toward deferring (or at least dropping to the 10K), and will decide for sure after running this Saturday. Turns out the deadline is September 7 to do so, so I don't have much time anyways.

Well, I'm not happy about it, but I'm deferring. It was definitely better this week than last, which is good, but my 8 miles were uncomfortable enough that I know shouldn't start building on that. I think I'll see if I can transfer my number and then regroup and try a marathon again either this spring or next fall.
Thanks again for all the advice!

You made the right choice. I have a friend now that ignored an obvious injury and what could have been a month on the sidelines has pretty much ended his 2015 racing. I sympathize, none of us like admitting that we sometimes need to take a break to allow an injury to heal, but I think it is the best option in the long run (no pun intended).
