I am not a runner but have started walking and mixing in jogging. Can a half marathon be walked/jogged or do you have to run it?

What ever you want to do, just need to keep the min pace. You can dance, skip, do the shuffle, run, sprint, jog, walk, wog, jog or racewalk it. Doesn't matter.

:welcome: As long as you maintain the 16mpm pace it doesn't matter. Lots of us around here are strictly walkers, and there are plenty of people who do intervals, as well as true runners. I've completed 19 half-marathons and have walked them all, with only the very occasional wog.

Glad to know I wouldn't be the only one! What may I ask, is wog? Is it walk/jog?

Do many people get swept? I am not fast (short legs) but hold my own. I am currently just above the walking 16 min. mile mark so am going to work on it.

My DH and I were going to sign up for the half in 2010 but found it's full (just learned of it today!). So, we'll be there in 2011. He tried to convince me to sign up for the whole marathon, but we've never done one and are the occasional walkers so I don't think it's wise to start there.

I showed him the 10k flyer for October but it's on his birthday and "not his idea of a fun birthday". I thought it'd be a perfect accomplishment on his 40th!

I will be walking/jogging the Half in Jan. It will be my first-ever marathon, and I hope I don't get swept.

Yes, wog = walk/jog. If you can aim for about at least a minute below the required pace, you should be good to go in whatever event you choose. As training goes, pick some sort of plan and do what you can to follow that. You don't want to injure yourself along the way. I've participated in a training program here that swore they could take new folks and get them through a marathon if they've never been active before. It could be done for 2010, but that would be a very strict training program at this point if you are not active already. Official training does not begin until the some time in August for the January event. Most everyone now is getting in base training. That would be more strength and stretch training while still working improving pace time.

Whatever you determine is best for you, have fun with it. I think it would be a great thing for DH to do an event on and in honor of his 40th!
