I'm new to running, i'm doing couch25k. I am having the hardest time finding sneakers that are comfy and don't give me blisters. I live in flip flops and crocs, so putting on sneakers doesn't feel good! I definitely like the minimal sneakers, anything more feels like too much shoe. I ended up sticking with nike free 3.0's. They're ok, but feel a bit snug. I got them at a running store and was fitted for them. Since them, i've seen some ryka desires and saucony outduels that felt good. Do you think it's a problem to alternate shoes? I think they have a 4mm toe drop for the other shoes, and my nikes are less then that.

If you're going to continue running on a consistent basis, then I would get another pair of running shoes.

Take a look at the Brooks Pure line ... 4mm heel drop ... I run in the Pure Flows & love them (I have two pair, different colors, that I rotate) ... they are more anatomically designed for your feet than most shoes ... have pretty decent cushioning too. (note: I average 40+ miles per week)

And congrats on starting C25K!!

Thanks for the recommendation for brooks pure flows. I went and tried them out and they felt great! I have to order them offline though, they didn't have the color I wanted. So, we'll see how they feel when I run in them.

I do alternate shoes. This give my shoes time to dry after work outs. I would go back to the running store where you bought the shoes. Tell them your problem with these shoes. I have done this and they take the shoes back and issued me a different pair, either larger in size or different brand. Enjoy your training.

I too, have the Brooks shoes. What a difference they made in my C25K training! I was just about ready to give up, when someone suggested I try different shoes. That was all it took for me. I only have one pair, but I would say if you are running daily more than just the 5k, you would probably want two pairs. My dilemma now is what shoes to wear in the park. I will have my Brooks for running the trails, but I don't want to wear them all day in the parks! Anyone have suggestions there?

Are you looking for suggestions for what to wear walking around in the parks all day? If so I wear crocs and teva mush flip flops.

As for running shoes, I finally found a pair that work for me..vibram seeyas.

I wear Vibram Speeds for running, but I am thinking about getting a pair of Sprints for the parks.

Rotating shoes is not necessary, but there are some benefits. I like being able to get a different feel from time to time. There are alot of minimal and Semi-minimal shoes out there to try on.

Saucony - Kinvara, A5, and Hattori
Brooks - Pure Flow and Pure Connect
Nike - Frees and some of their racing flats.
New balance and Merrill make a few that are really minimal

If you like the Frees, and want to try something different, I would recommend the Kinvara. To me, it feels alot like the Frees (3.0 v 4), but has more room in the toe box. The Pure Flow is okay, but it is a bit softer than the Free or Kinvara. The Connect is probably firmer than Free and Kinvara.

I am not into the Vibrams. I do not like the separate compartment for the toes. It is supposed to allow the toes to splay, but it keeps them there. Your toes cannot come back in as they should "naturally". I think this is why you see the second metatarsal fractures. This is not from landing (that would be the 5th metatarsal). I think it comes from pushing off when the toes are unnaturally spread. You see this fracture more in Vibrams than barefoot runners. If you like them, that is cool, just be careful.

I run in Newtons--only have one pair, but I take the inserts out after every run so that everything dries out well.

For the parks I wear merrell sandals--not the most attractive shoes, but I can walk for days and days and days in them without problems or I'll wear a pair of Brooks Ghost that I have from before. I will probably always keep a pair of Brooks around for other stuff I do at the gym, but I won't run in them again.:goodvibes

Newtons fall in the minimalist shoe category and it is really hard to land midfoot in the ghost. I end up heel striking or running on my toes. They are great walking around shoes and I will even walk on the treadmill in them. They were great running shoes when I was landing on my heels, but I am trying really hard not to do that anymore.:)

I alternate my shoes and have different shoes for different things. I have 2 pair that I alternate for running, a pair for walking and a pair for biking. I need a much heavier shoe for running than I do for the other types of exercise I do.

My wife and I have a slight shoe addiction, so yes we rotate shoes around.

My favorites right now are Sketchers Go Run Ride. I am using them for my longer runs along with my Kinvara 2s.

My more minimalist shoes I use on our shorter runs.
