The PP is talking about closing clubs in favor of restaurants.
I preferred the club (Adventurers Club was it for me, didn't go to any of the others), I could go there alone. I don't like restaurants alone. But then it will be brought up that most guests at WDW are not alone.
It would be different if the places going in were really unique. But there is nothing unique about them.
They are just turning DTD into any mall in America. It is becoming nothing more than a tourist trap, as why would anyone else care about going there except a captured audience?
I agree completely. I enjoy doing things at Disney World that I can't do elsewhere. It's not so much the outsourcing that I object to, it's the lack of things that can't be found everywhere else. The restaurants are okay, but they certainly aren't fine dining - and most of them have locations in other cities. Plus, I'm not going to go to the DTD restaurants every night of a trip (or shop at the DTD stores every evening) but I used to go to the Adventurers Club almost every night when we were in Orlando. There was so much variety that every night there was different.
For me, Pleasure Island (and the Adventurers Club specifically) was a destination. Without that, Downtown Disney is no better than any Mills mall or semi-upscale outdoor shopping mall.
Why waste vacation time shopping and eating there, when you can go to similar restaurants and shops (and buy the same things) elsewhere? I'd rather be entertained when I'm on vacation.
The new restaurant might be good, but it could easily have gone into the empty buildings while the Clubs were still operating.
Once again, if that restaurant was really unique I could understand it as an enhancement to DTD. But even when a Disney manager can name other similar restaurants, which are very nearby, what's the point? (As he did when he was explaining to a AC crowd one night.)
Almost makes me think that was the highest bidder, not necessarily chosen as an unique family friendly experience.
I have not ever seen Bongo's jammed packed, although I don't go peeking inside. (Haven't dined inside Bongo's since they stopped accepting DDE years ago.)
Having a similar theme restaurant nearly next door should not be big deal for anyone. And if they do not accept the DDP you almost might as well cross them off most guest's list of places to dine.
It won't be a place we care about, just as AC and CW is not for everyone. I understand that perfectly. However I would not begrudge those going to it or wanting to.
All in all, Disney could care less. If you and I don't go, there are a lot of other suckers, I mean guests ,that have never been there before, or only go once every 5 to 8 years, so they will always feel that things are "new". Therefore, they will ALWAYS have a full resort. There are enough bodies in this world so that Disney can continue to "cheap" up and give less and they will always have warm bodies that think the place is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
so you're fine with a bunch of outsourced, chain restaurants on Disney property? As if there aren't enough of them, they decide to take away the only viable nightlife option for single travelers, college kids, and convention goers in favor of outsourced junk.
What happened to "you're dead if you aim only for kids. Adults are only kids grown up anyway"
But WDW is not "closing clubs in favor of restaurants." The only new restaurants went in the site of the former valet parking lot (not used since 2001 or 2002) and a building that held a fast food restaurant and some shops.
No plans have been announced for the closed clubs. They continue to sit empty. There is no "new vision" for PI, no matter how many press releases WDW puts out.

Yes, but due to the announcements Disney has made the general perception is that Disney closed the clubs in order to substitute restaurants, or perhaps shops. That is the assumption a previous poster made.
I understand Disney closed the clubs because it decided to cease running them.
Agree with TDC Nala.
Already I have read posts wondering when the new stores and restaurants will open now that the clubs are gone.
Well, all it meant was there is less to go to. Not necessarily more or different.
A good start it at what? Killing off everything that makes Disney unique? Orlando and everyplace else has plenty of restaurants so you shouldn't have to eat the same place twice in your lifetime but how many unique clubs exist where you can kick back and enjoy life? Not many in surely not enough. Several of the club's in PI were very unique and not replicated anyplace else. The only thing closing them was a good start at was ruining what's left of Disney.
