I encouraged my friend to post her April reservation that she couldn't make on the disboards rent/trade. She did and received this message (She didn't read the rules first:confused3 )

An existing reservation cannot be offered by any means until 30 days prior to the Reservation's Check-In date. This includes submitting a "Reservation for Rent" thread, posting a reply to a "Reservation Wanted" thread or any other use of the DISboards to contact another user in order to offer that reservation. We allow existing reservations to be offered only when a member is within 30 days of check in and the points would go into the "Holding" account if the reservation was cancelled. Additional rules apply when offering an existing reservation in response to a "Reservation Wanted" thread and are explained below.

I am wondering why this rule exists, can anyone explain this to me. She then misunderstood and thought she just couldn't post the exact dates of the trip and re-posted without the dates. Then she got a 10 point penalty and hasn't got a clue what that means. Leave it to her to get in this much trouble:sad1:

It exists because of a number of professional renters who were canabalizing as many rooms as they could in key occupancy times (such as Christmas time which they would reserve exactly 11 months out) and then renting that time on these boards. The rule discourages Disboard members from doing that. You can rent as far out as you want by offering to make a reservation for a time that the buyer may desire but you essentially cannot rent by first reserving time and then offering that specific room and time for rent.

Thanks, that makes sense:) I will have to explain this to her. does her 10 point penalty :upsidedow mean she can't post anymore?

She may continue to post, unless advised by a R/T Board mod or Webmaster that she has lost access to that board.

Her infraction ponts also will expire on a specified date. Have her check her DIS profile where the infraction and expiration date should show for her.

The main purpose of the DVC Rent/Trade board is to pair up members with excess points with other DISboard members who would like to reserve a stay at a DVC resort. The member would then try to make a reservation for the dates that person would like to go. It is not intended to be used to sell existing reservations.

However, if someone has to cancel their trip at the last minute (within 30 days of check in) causing their points to go into the holding account, then and only then, we allow them to offer that reservation on the R/T board. If someone is still outside the 30-day window and could cancel the reservation without penalty, perhaps those nights would go to a DVC member on the waiting list. It's up to the member to decide whether they would rather cancel and try to rent the points, hang on until they are inside the holding period and try to rent the reservation here on the DVC Rent/Trade board, or use some other site (ebay, TUG) to try to rent out the existing reservation.

Your friend still has access to the Rent/Trade board but tell her she must read the rules threads at the top of the R/T board before posting again. She should start with the "Read me first" thread and then read the "Required Reading" thread.
