Rug size & shape - match table (oval) or room (square)?

If my current room has hardwood floors, and I want to purchase an area rug to go under the dining room table - what shape rug should I puchase? The table is oval shape and the room is square. Also what size should the rug be (i.e., 2 feet bigger all around than the table and chairs)? Don't know if there is a "preferred" decorating style.

Okay, I have nothing useful to say, but I have to tell you that I thought this topic title was, "RING shize and shape- match table".... I was wondering why you wanted to match a ring to a table.

I say oval. It will compliment the table.

I say rectangular. You would have to get a fairly large oval to have enough room for the chairs. I hate it when your chair is half on/half off a rug. You can get a nice oriental rug with an oval madallion in the middle, sort of the best of both worlds.

I have an oval rug under my dining room table. The table is square-ish, but with rounded corners.

If I had to do it over. I would have bought the rug a little bigger than I did. I bought it to be a bit ibigger than the table,when really it should be a bit smaller than the room.

Buy it so that there is about 3 feet along the "sides" of the oval that have your floor showing, and about 2 feet at the "points" of the oval that have your floor showing.

I would go with square or rectangle rug, and have the rug out further than the chair. How far out would depend on how big the room is.
