First let me say, we LOVED the kids run!! My 5 year old had a blast!

However, did anyone else just not understand why they handed out RUBBER "medals"? Don't get me wrong, I didn't expect the kids to get medals like the 1/2 marathoners, but I didn't expect a piece of rubber either!

Thoughts?

FWIW - This was our first Disney run, so we really didn't know what to expect.

So no one else was surprised? Just curious if this is standard for the kids races

I don't think it's just the kids' races. At the 5K of Marathon Weekend, the medallion (they NEVER say medals to my knowledge) was rubber as well.

REALLY??! I saw a couple (never touched one) and they were cute (a lot cuter than the kid's ones in my opinion!).

I don't want anyone to think I'm complaining - just surprised!! We had so much fun and we will be back next year for sure!

They were this year anyway. It was my first, so I'm not sure if that's always how it is. But it seems like I read somewhere on here that "medallion" = rubber/pvc.

Yes, this is normal for the Disney races (at least the last 2 years). My kids did the kids races and my DH did the 5k in October and these were the medallions that they received.

This past week, the kids did the kids races, DH did the 5k and I did the Princess 1/2 and these were what we received.

I do think the theme of the October medallions was cuter, but the kids love them all! I think you do have to take into consideration that we paid $10/kid for their races vs $45 (??) for the 5K and around $140 for the 1/2.

Glad you enjoyed the races! My family is hooked and planning our next Disney race!

It seems as if you get an actual medal if it is a timed race; if it is a fun, untimed, race, they give out medallions.

Maybe that is the distinction they make- hadn't thought of that but it makes sense! On last weekends races, the kids races, kids 1K and 5K runs all recieved the rubber medallions. And the 1/2 received the medal. The only thing I didn't like on the 1/2 medal was the velcro closure- I would have preferred the snap type like the kids medallians had. ;)

Actually, my DS did the kids 1 mile race which WAS timed, and got the same rubber medallion so there goes that idea (and his race fee was $25, for the record.)

We found it a little odd that his 1 miler was chip timed but the 5k wasn't. I posted another thread about that...guess the 5k is considered a "fun run" where the kids 1 miler is a timed race for some reason. My DS thought it was cool to have his D tag on just like he has seen us do. All of the races he's done so far have been manually timed, so that was cool for him!

I didn't realize that the 1 mile was timed! Guess that does blow that theory somewhat. We are working on getting my son ready for the 1 mile next time and eventually the 5k. I'm sure that was cool for him to have the d tag!

For the kids' race for the ESPN 5k, they received real medals. It is generic from Wide World of Sports, but DD is thrilled that it is a medal. She wouldn't wear the medallion around the parks, but she made sure everyone saw that medal. We also received real medals for the 5k which are really nice.

Since my trip to run the 2011 Princess, my girls (DD7 and DD9) want to run at Disney too. They can't decide between the kids mile and the 5k. I would prefer that they run the mile for the cost alone. Anyone out there whose children have done both? Just curious which is more fun for them?

My DD did the mile and 100M, and was in the stroller (she's 2) when we did the 5k . I just wanted to comment that for the 5k, people were still jockying around quite a bit because it was fairly crowded. I guess I'm thinking along the lines of the flow of runners and how well everyone watches out for younger kids on the course. Whereas the mile, of course, is all kids (with some parents running along, too).
On the flip side, I think the 5k would be more fun for them given all the extra character opportunities! If I remember right, the Mickey Mile just had Mickey Mouse at it. Either way, they both were great and I highly recommend both!!

Great point! I didn't even think about this. My oldest would have no problem with the flow of runners but my youngest will not enjoy that.

Are the little rubber medals the same for all kid races or do they distinguish the mile from the others?

Yep, the rubber/plastic medals are the same for all kids races, including the mile.
