Roy, Stan & Save Disney FAIL

Roy isn't Walt, and I don't think he ever wanted to be. He got thrust into the role because his last name was Disney. Even his kids aren't interested. Walt's daughter isn't really fond of Roy and didn't back him in his efforts.

I'm just curious as to where you found this information? Is this the same daughter who does a column on the Save Disney website? Is this the same daughter who attended the shareholders meeting with Roy as pictured here:

I don't think Roy is as talented as Walt was. I do believe that besides the financial concerns he is concerned about how the company's reputation has slipped in the past few years due to many factors that have occurred during Ei$ner's watch.

The young lady in the posted link is Abigail, who is Roy's daughter. WD (in part) also referred to Walt's daughter, who is still alive and well, her name Diane Disney-Miller.

I agree. The only thing Roy's been "thrust" into has been now on 2 occassions to feel compelled to try to 'save' the company. However the years of his work with the company (thur animation and many other areas) have also always been his passion and he gave that service happily and willingly.

Convert & wdw4us, were neither of you greatly concerned that the only statements made by Roy and Stan with regard to the Comcast sale centered around the Company (Disney) being undervalued? It didn't bother you that neither of them EVER spoke of the ramifications of a non independent Disney? Do either of you believe that Roy or Stan would have stood in the way of the Comcast sale had the price been (say) doubled? Do either of you think any semblence of Walt's legacy would/could continue with the company being just an arm of a multi national conglomerate like Comcast?
Do either of you believe that the Comcast BOD would handle Disney with kid gloves and be more inclined to favor them with creative talent over financial talent? I'm centering these queries on Comcast because that was the closest Disney has come to falling since the 'good ole days' of Card Walker and Ron Miller and Roy and Stan simply didn't object for the right reasons.

Peter, my take on that was that it was the best defense in favor of preventing it from happening. Alot of finacial 'talking heads' speculated very early on that comcast would not be up'ing it offer, and Roy and even Ei$ner knew that.

Absolutely not! Make no mistake, I think a non independent WDC would unquestionably spell the end of it.

I believe that Roy and Stan objected on the best platforms available, remember that the message(s) they had/do have to/ project need to influnence not only the those of us with Disney hearts, but the penciled-necked geeks with pocket protectors on wall street too.

I do agree with your statement regarding the treatment of the WDC if Comcast had ended up with it.

However, you seem to indicate that Roy and Stans' interest was purely financial. While I am sure that was a large portion of their interest, it was not the only one. Do you think that without their participation anything would have happened regarding the obscene Michael Ovitz payoff? Do you think Ei$ner would have been removed as CoB of the WDC? Do you think Ei$ner's succession plan would have been instituted if they hadn't been so vocal? These are all things that needed to be acted upon and they never would have happened if someone hadn't challenged Ei$ners' position.

In answer to your questions, yes, no, yes.

Roy and Stan succeded in getting Eisner to resign as COB...Not really too significant, IMO. I think the Ovitz thing would have come to light (although I'm admittedly short of knowledge of the current status of this issue) and Eisner has always said he would be retiring in 2006, but the succesion plan is still really nothing.

But, as with Convert, I guess we do agree on the need for Disney's autonomy, which is why I (still) fail to see your overt support for Roy boy.

Peter, we do agree on the company's need for independence. But I still fail to see how you can't see that the position you're taking such issue with a)was the only one that could win, and b) did win, by helping to ice the proposed takeover

And I have to repectfully disagree in regards to it being 'no big deal' to have Ei$ner stripped of any title. To an egomaniac such as he, it was a very big deal even if not shown publicly.

As for the sucession plan, I am 100% confident it is really 'something'. The pressure and the scrutiny that the company's board and management has been subjected to due to the work started by save disney basically forced the board into hiring an outside firm to lead and guide the course of that process.
Further, disney knows that the SEC is watching this saga (and others) and it's developments very carefully and will internally use these observations to guide it's further rulings effecting shareholders rights (ie, if shareholders can force an alternate slate before a meeting when "x" percentage of a companies shareholders have with held their votes for management/bod).
The BOD is taking this seriously, as they now well know if it's found that they were not, or they were simply going to rubber-stamp or go the 'old boy' way, they could personally be held accountable for a breach of fiduciary duty.

And don't get too excited about the SEC. They enforce compliance but they settle.

I've always been able to believe in it. It seems to always be available to us; if not from the power of a Kobayashi Maru approach,
or from the creativity of people,
