SO what do the Jewish posters here do for Rosh Hashanah... Does anyone have any good recipes to share?

Friday night I'll be having dinner with the family -- challah, gefilte fish, chicken soup with matzah balls, brisket, roast turkey....and, of course, apples dipped in honey. ditto Saturday night, though my kids will be with their father and his family.

we'll got to temple both mornings. and we will perform tashlik at a local pond Sunday afternoon (you throw bread into the water to symbolize casting off your sins).

I don't belong to a synagogue, so the only choice I have are on-campus services, and I don't care for the rabbi they bring in, so I'll be at home, probably working. :-(

I'll be in WDW over Yom Kippur, so I have to make sure I get my work done before I leave.

Well THIS Catholic girl will be loading up on the challah and matzo ball soup at the corporate cafeteria. I salute you for some of the best holiday food in America. YUM. I look forward to Rosh Hashanah from Labor Day onwards. :)

this year the holidays will be very empty for us. My Dad passed away on October 19 th last year and My Mom was gone for 16 months before. This is the first year ever without any parent :sad1: So we are not doing much this year.. I am still too sad..

May G-d comfort you and all the mourners of Zion.

I'm sorry. :grouphug: Your dad passed away on my birthday :guilty:

My family is in a similar boat. My grandfather passed away at the beginning of November. He was a religious Jew whose favorite time of the year was Rosh Hashanah/Yom Kippur. It's going to be very difficult.

But, we decided that we were going to fill the house with people and food and spend the time together like he would have wanted. My sister and I are even driving the 6 hours home for the weekend. :Pinkbounc

Wishing everyone a very Happy and Peaceful New Year!

first night we are going down to my parent's and I am bringing roasted beets, carrots, leeks, and winter squash
plus a honey cake & a date, banana, chocolate chip, flax seed cake

saturday after services & tashlich we are going to my aunts and I am making braised beet greens with leeks, a round pumpkin challah plus the same two cakes.

I try to eat/ serve/ cook as many simanim (symbolic foods) as I can every year

I'll try and work it in in conversation

BTW, Where does one buy a sheeps head?

Well, I made my chicken soup and potato kugels today...

The Friday night (really, late afternoon) menu will be:
Apples & Honey
Challah
Gefilte Fish
Chicken Soup w/ egg noodles
Pot Roast (brisket) & Gravy
Potato Kugel
Chicken Fricassada (Chicken cooked in tomatoes, cinnamon & honey)
cous cous
carrots
Chocolate Honey Bars
Pecan pie
Some apple dessert (friend is bringing)

Go to Erev RH services

Saturday
Morning RH services

Saturday night - similar menu at aforementioned friend's house.

I have the soup, pot roast and kugel done. Also, the dishes have been brought out and washed. Now I just have to clean the house, do the rest of the shopping and cook everything else. Oh - and work all week.

And my DMIL is coming in Wednesday night so she and DH can go to bris at the crack of dawn Thursday in DC.

It's going to be a crazy week.
