Rose & Crown with allergies?

I can't seem to find recent reviews of Rose & Crown with more than just gluten issues. The things I'm seeing in those reviews look to have dairy. Looking over the menu I thing gluten and milk will be our most difficult of our many allergies. My egg allergic caught loves steak so that's easy enough at least for her entree, but I'm considering the Candlelight Processional package so that means appetizer, entree, and dessert. Three of us can't have gluten or dairy among many other things but as I said I think those two will be the most difficult to deal with there.

Has anybody eaten there with these or even multiple allergies in the past year? I'm not sure from the menu if we'all have many options.

Thanks!

Not that it's an exciting option, but I know they offered DS steamed rice with a choice of corn or broccoli and they had chicken and fish he could have. Basically that means they had those items completely plain to add seasonings to. He also had rice dream. I have no idea if they have appetizer options but they can probably create some sort of a stir fry for you rather than the kids meal.
I can't claim to know if it will be exciting but you can probably not starve and stay alive at the same time which is always a plus.

Safe is always good. :-). Thanks for sharing your experience.

My kids are actually Disney Adults so they can order off the kids menu. I think the appetizer menu has shrimp and scallops and sometimes they eat those so appetizers would probably be something easy to do. I'm not as confident about entree though it sounds like they keep several types of simple proteins on hand so we should be able to get something even if it doesn't resemble anything on the menu. They actually choose white rice over most other starches so it's good to hear they can get that. For dessert I was guessing the standard Tofutti and/or Enjoy Life cookies. If they have Rice Dream then those are likely there too.

Hmmmmm..... I'll see how that sounds to them though I'll wait to see if anybody else has additional experiences. It is encouraging knowing they have more basic ingredients than I figured from the menu.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately only one review is within the last 2 years and it doesn't mention actual foods and is for different allergies. I think the menu has changed since the most recent review unfortunately. I've checked my usual allergy bloggers and haven't seen much which is frustrating.

I know your kids are a bit older, so you have not had a need to notice a trend the last few years to keep adding more of the healthy options on the children's menus. I don't think they are doing this to appease parents who want healthier kid's meals. They are all items that are completely plain so I think it is part of a plan to stock those types of foods for dietary needs. Every year we go back and the children's menus are more taken over by items that are not "kid friendly" but which add new stock to the kitchen. Specific to Rose and Crown this year the kid's menu has turkey meatballs, baked catfish, grilled chicken, house salad and fruit salad. NONE of those are on the adult menu so it adds two meats, a fish and all that produce to your options. It may be useful to you when trying to assess what they are likely to have in stock to check out the children's menu even if you aren't going to use it.

We dined there in 13 or 12? Can't remember which trip that was, now, but it wasn't my favorite. It looked good, but flavor was lacking. You can see what we ordered, here
The chicken curry with veggies and the cracker bread made of lentil flour was all quite bland. It had potential to be good, but just wasn't exciting (it was gluten free and dairy free, and I can't imagine egg in this dish?)
My kiddo had cottage pie that was gluten free, but with dairy, and she didn't care for it and didn't eat it. She normally loves cottage pie and anything like it. The food was just not exciting.
Dessert for multiple allergies was rice dream and nothing creative added, though I think they could put some of their fruit compote on if you asked (I would guess that to be safe, but would need to check). My daughter had a gluten free 3 part dessert with dairy, but it didn't wow her either.
Basically, everything looked pretty, but lacked in flavors. My husband said it is just like eating in London when he travels! LOL

I think the food at R&C is pretty awful :o without any accommodations made for allergies. I would imagine that changes due to allergies probably wouldn't make it better, although I would have probably prefer the rice and broccoli to what I usually get (if they'd give me some salt, LOL). However, we eat there at least once every trip because it's such a great place to watch Illuminations. If that's the OP's reason for going, I think ya' just have to know that the food isn't great going in and enjoy the fireworks. It's cheaper than the Illuminations Dessert Party, which we're trying this year even though I haven't heard fabulous things about it.

*Edited to add: Pay attention, Jenni. OP clearly says it's for the Candlelight Processional. In that case, I'd be asking what the other options are... If they aren't better, then my original answer sort of still stands, in that you're doing it to get good seating and you'll just have to know that the food isn't going to be stellar.

Have you contacted special dining?

I do realize the results may not be up to date but you can see general trends in different places on the WDW property. Also, you may manage different allergies but again, if they can handle ABC well they can usually do XYZ well too.

We went to Rose and Crown in 2012 and had a wonderful experience. The chef came out, asked us what allergens we were avoiding and what we felt like eating (on or off the menu). When we placed our order (a menu item), he almost seemed disappointed that we didn't choose anything difficult - he said he enjoys the challenge of making creative meals for special guests with allergies. We had an excellent curry (nut/peanut/dairy-free and vegan - more than likely gluten-free as well), and fresh fruit for dessert. We were extremely pleased by both the service and the food.

I wish people posted more about what they actually ate on that site. It's really not terribly useful for people to just say great or not because it doesn't help you figure out what they can do for you. I get what they are going for, I've even left reviews there, but have really not found the site helpful when I need it. It's really hard to use old reports too because chefs leave or move around. By the time a review is 2-3 years old it's likely the entire staff has turned over. Unfortunately it often doesn't hold that a place good with some allergens is good with others. For example, the Mexican pavilion restaurants may be great with your nut allergy, but I wouldn't recommend it for somebody allergic to dairy. Just like how Columbia Harbor house is excellent with allergies- but they have a warning on their new menu not to go there with a shellfish allergy. I am guessing, given the amount the OP has posted on this board and traveled to Disney in the past, that she was looking for that sort of red flag which would not come up with reviews that do not apply to their allergies. I know she's concerned with multiple people with multiple allergies, where you're really better off just asking people who might have a recent experience. The 10 people who would suddenly pop in and say "they were great, as long as you aren't avoiding that one thing" are what is being looked for.

We've always enjoyed Rose and Crown, as with most of the showcase it's a matter of taste I guess.

I did also suggest contacting special diets as that may be more useful. I am sorry you don't feel Allergy eats is helpful but I find it a go to any time I start planning a trip. No, it doesn't cover anything but I do feel it gives me a place to start before I call the restaurant.

The Epcot restaurant are often not Disney owned and not Disney run or trained. Any time you dine at a non Disney establishment, the expectations should be much different as the typical Disney training isn't there.

I won't suggest AE here anymore as it's viewed as useless. Thanks!

As with most everything -- everyone has personal preferences. People need to pick and choose which information shared on an Internet board is most helpful to their specific situation. I'm glad you've found a site that you feel to be informative and helpful for you. The fact that another poster didn't find it as useful shouldn't necessarily be a reflection on your suggestion. There may be another who finds it as helpful as you.

Enjoy your vacation!

I'm sorry, I think I came across wrong and it seems like I offended you which isn't what I was trying to do at all. I was just saying something I found frustrating specific to reviews on the site when I've been investigating options, which is not unique to that site either. It isn't at all a reflection on your advice or to say that the site doesn't have a great purpose. It's not a one size fits all situation. I've found it more useful, when there is a wide variety of allergens involved, to have an interactive environment such as a forum rather than a review site because you end up needing more detail about how they accomplished making special foods. In my experience I have had to rely on what people have said online (mostly here) and have been unable to communicate with Disney chefs or get much out of special diets until we are sitting down at the place in question.

Oh no it's all good! I just never thought of it as needing to be 100% up to the minute to be helpful but perhaps others see it differently!

I was sent several lists by special diets which I found very useful too but again, my experience may be different and I may have different expectations! I know those sites are only as good as the reviews they get and I do try and enter into the database any change I get. It takes a village kind of thing.

I know there are many people with many varied allergy type situations so no, one size doesn't fit all! I agree 100%

We ate there in August 2013 with a peanut, shellfish allergic child and one gluten free child. I don't remember what they ate, but the meal was perfect and safe. It was better than I expected!
