Rose & Crown is probably the most overlooked restaurant in the WS, and I can't for the life of me figure out why!
I did my solo trip from 12/4-12/8, with my first ADR made for R&C 7:20 p.m. I arrived early (7:00)and very hungry, so I asked if I could be seated early. Was given a beeper and told not to wander far. I took a couple of pictures of the UK pavilion
and in a short time my beeper went off. I was seated by 7:10. I was given a seat next to a faux fireplace pretty much in the center of things (I hate being stuck in corners or next to kitchens when I'm dining alone...makes me feel second-class!). This was almost perfect, but had a downside...as servers walked by, they had a little trouble going 'round the corner without bumping me! The upside? Lots of attention by ALL the servers!
My server, Lee, promptly came over to introduce himself and take my drink order. I wanted to get into the Disney mood quickly, so I asked him for a recommendation. He suggested the Blue Glowtini ($9.25), which is the YOAMD drink for R&C. He said that not only would it get me into the Disney mood quickly, but had the added benefit of attracting lots of admiring gazes. He was right on both counts. Thanks, Lee!
While I was working on that, he asked if I would like to start with an appetizer. Again, I asked for his recommendations, and he suggested that if I like mushrooms, I should start with the Stewed Mushrooms ($5.99), which are in a cream sauce and baked into a flaky pastry. These were wonderful, with a nice, peppery taste and PLENTY of mushrooms!
He also suggested for an entree the Steak and Fish, but since the fish was deep-fried and I'd already stretched my WeightWatchers budget far too much with the drinkie and 'shrooms, I decided to get the Grilled Steak instead. That came with a Black&Tan DemiGlace, served with Yorkshire pudding, mashed potatoes and green beans($21.99). I substituted peas for the beans and ordered the steak medium rare.
The meal arrived perfectly timed, a short time after I had finished my mushrooms. The steak was perfectly cooked, red but warm in the center. So tender you could cut it with a butter knife (which was a good thing, as I didn't get a steak knife! Didn't ask for one, though, as it wasn't needed.). The demiglace added a very nice flavor to the whole. Potatoes and peas were ordinary, but really, how can you mess them up? The Yorkshire pudding was different, though. I never have had this dish, and really didn't know what to expect...just know it's a rather traditional English side dish. What it turned out to be was a sort of moist popover...can't describe it much better than that...with a savory flavor. The flavor was nice, but the texture...meh. Didn't eat much of it. On the whole, the meal was simple and well-prepared.
At the end of my meal, I was offered dessert, but decided to go with a Bailey's coffee (decaf) to settle my meal. It was brought promptly, and I was allowed to linger over it for a good, long time. I NEVER felt rushed into paying my tab.
The ambience of this restaurant is very comfortable and friendly, with pub music wafting throughout the dining room, and warm, dark wood tones to the furnishings and paneling...but lots of light as well, and light wallpaper to brighten it up considerably. The service is exceptionally friendly, and never had to go a moment with a dry water glass. Dishes were timed to arrive perfectly. I never felt rushed, nor ignored as a single diner. All the servers were quick with a friendly smile. I strongly recommend this restaurant to families, solos, or couples. Total bill...$46.84, with tip $60
