We are thinking of eating here and not sure about how the food will be. We like to try at least 1 new restaurant when we go so this may be the new place next year. Any and all input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone in advance.

Rose & Crown used to be my absolute favorite restaurant, until we went in May and saw that they had changed the menu. Now it's very bland and boring - they took away my favorite soup, dessert and the chicken pasty I loved. Now it's such a predictable menu. I had the cheese plate for an appetizer which was alright, but they didn't explain what each cheese was. For dinner I had the bangers and mash which was alright - not bad at all, but not outstanding, either. The service was really friendly ad they do have great beers. I would try it if you can't think of any place else you'd like to try, but it's really not as good as it used to be.

While the food is still OK, I, like Prinny27, was disappointed on my last visit. We loved the Shepherd's Pie, but they took it off the dinner menu! They have greatly reduced the menu selections. If you're having second thoughts about eating there, you may want to try just stopping by the lovely bar for a pint. I don't know if you're using the DDP, but personally, I wouldn't waste a table service credit on it. Enjoy your trip!

donnt waist your $$$$$ at the rose and crown..service and food have gone right down hill...raw fish .uncooked fries,,cold buns right from kitchen,,,long wiats in line...nothing for your $$$$..we didnt even go near the place the last 3 trips..its that bad,,,im not kidding..

My mother is the all-time pickiest eater and she loved it! We went to Rose & Crown solely because we liked the idea of eating dinner while watching Illuminations. I suggested she order the steak (safe choice) but she got the fish & chips with it. We had a wonderful meal, although I would say make sure that you choose food that you are comfortable with... the fish & chips were awesome and I loved the mushroom appetizer.

We scheduled dinner there again for our November trip. Can't wait!

I find it interesting that so many people did not like Rose and Crown. I ate there a little over a year ago (for the 2nd or 3rd time) and liked it very much. Though it was on our 'alternate' list for our trip in August... we scheduled a dinner there instead of one of our other alternates. eating outside by the lake was so relaxing and the food was very good. DD princess: really enjoyed hers as well (can't for the life of me remember what she had  but do remember she really liked Rose and Crown!)

Hope for our sake, and for everyone else scheduled to eat there it hasn't gone down hill since May 06!

We have been eating at the R&C since our very first trip and always enjoyed our meals. Service and food have always been very good. We always start with the mushroom starter, it is so good.

I love the Rose and Crown; last trip, I booked it as part of the CP package. Salad was great, as was the prime rib dinner that followed. Ended with a Baily's creme brulee. Lovely meal, and we weren't rushed. I also like their fish and chips (more of a lunch thing for me).

We went there during free dining last year. We were all very disappointed. The food wasn't that great, and the service was so SLOWWWW!!! After the third hour there, we finally just got up and told the waiter to forget the dessert. DH still had to wait another 15-20 minutes for the bill. Everyone around us were practically falling asleep in their seats. They almost applauded us when our family finally just got up and left. One dad said something like, "I guess that's what you gotta do to get out of here!" Maybe a new person was training that day?? Maybe the chef didn't show up??? Who knows, but we won't be going there again.

Oh, and in the late evening, the pub area gets rather loud with the drinking people. It really wasn't a big issue, but if you don't like being around the drinking (like me), then it can effect you.

Our family lists R&C as one of our must do restaurants for every trip.

I love their cheese offering much better than the one at Chefs de France:

I also love the Bangers and Mash:

The food is very good. It is authentic English comfort food therefore it is not loaded down with tons of added flavorings or sauces like many cuisines have conditioned us to eat. The food relies on subtle flavors from the core ingredients and requires one to savor each bite to enjoy the nuances of how flavor is built in the dishes offered in English cuisine. Not everyone likes the subtle flavors (we live in a society that over salts and over seasons everything) so many would discourage you to visit, but I say try it for yourself and make up your own mind. Maybe you decide it is not your cup of tea (pun intended) but maybe you will find a gem you want to make part of your family's regular itinerary!!!

:thumbsup2

If you're wanting fish and chips, go next door--much cheaper. The toffee cake is to die for, but I found everything else to be bland and uninteresting, but certainly edible!

They really chopped down the menu and I was sad to see the Guiness Stew gone. Now I will just do the fish and chips at the counter. If you do go the potato leek soup is quite yummy.

We just went in June and of all of our meals this was our least favorite. My fish and chips were okay - but no one else really liked their meal at all - I felt like it was a waste of my table service - however, the service was spectacular - probably the best we had all week!

We ate here a couple of weeks ago and really liked it. After reading reviews I was kind of nervous that we wouldn't like it but decided to keep the ADR. Yes, the menu is limited but everyone could find something they liked. The fish and chips were good, as well as the steak and chicken. We ate on the patio which was nice and peaceful. The service was very good. This will be on our list for next trip.
