Tried the Rose and Crown for the first time last week. We had a reservation for the 4 of us (me, DW, DD9 and DS4) at 19:30 and were given a pager and told it would be 15 minutes. They told us the pager had limited range and we were restricted to the England area. Pager went off about 5 minutes later.
Luck! we got an outside table with a superb view of the Illuminations show that was to come at 21:00.
Ordered a tenants lager (me) kind of bitter, but that is my experience with English beer, DW had a chardonnay (unremarkable). Appetizers were the salad (me), with the mustard vinagrette-a good salad---kind of hated to order it with some of the more ethnic selections but it was a good salad. DW ordered the Mushroom Medley. She loved it, and it smelled so good from where I was sitting, (I barely got a taste).
Entrees-DD-9, the kids fish and chips. This was way too little food for her. She's only 60 lbs but a competitive swimmer and eats like a horse, but luck was with us once again, I got the adult fish and chips and it was huge. I gave her a third of my giant piece of fish and she was as happy as a clam at high tide. The fish was really good...crisp, hot, very good. The chips need some improvement. Got the recommended black and tan with this...pretty good. DW got the English pie sampler. She enjoyed the cottage pie most, pork pie second and lastly the chicken and leek (too salty and creamy for her). I liked the one taste I got of each pie, but the chicken and leek the best.
Dessert- I went with the sticky toffee pudding-excellent, DW had warm apple crumble. She felt the apple was a bit too tart and over-compensated with sugar. Kids had the King and Queen Sundaes...great sundaes with king and queen chocolate crowns....and here is where the night gets extra special.
It is about 10 minutes before Illuminations. Two of the Rose and Crown staff approach our table and relay that Mickey has run into trouble and is late for the Illuminations show. He has requested the assistance of (my) two children to start the fireworks show in his absence. Would they be willing to help Mickey out (they ask)? Certainly is our reply. The children are given red light sabers and taken to a special area to watch the show. They practice for awhile with the countdown and thrusting their swords toward the globe and "wishing with all their might for the fireworks to begin and for a great show". Well finally it is time for the real thing...3..2..1....Go!...and the fireworks explode precisely when they thrust their sword in the air. My DS mouth drops open and he looks in amazement at the end of his lasser sword. We can't all fit in this area so me and DW go back to the table. After the show DD and DS are returned to us. They are pumped up beyond belief....about 5 minutes later R/C staff return with (frameable) certificates of appreciation from Mickey for starting the show in his absence.
I had fixed this dining review in my mind prior to all the Illuminations stuff. It truly was a nice dinner (exclusive of the fireworks detailed above). My DSiS and family ate at another Epcot restaurant and did not have nearly the meal that we did (they went to Ireland and England a couple of years ago and were not fond of the food and opted for something else). Thank you Rose and Crown...we had a memorable and truly special time.
