Rope drop?

Ya know...this whole rope drop thing is one of those "it all depends" type of scenarios. If you have 4 days to see the "world" and are totally a committed commando, then maybe the rope drop will get you on line earlier and in play earlier to cruise the parks. However......big however.....if you are there for 7 plus days and have a park hopper, it just is not worth the effort. I personally hate rope drops. Very stressful to me. Although....as one poster pointed out...the MK one is worth seeing exactly once. Again...it's all personal preference.

I agree!!! Rope drop is awful, terrible torture... something NO ONE should have to be put through. Sleep in till noon, get to the parks around 2pm or so... maybe even leave early so you can enjoy the hotel room a bit more. Why even bother coming to Disney? Stay home!

I'm being very sarcastic here. I've been to Disney World twice and every single day we have done rope drop. I enjoy every second of the time I spend in the parks and just because I spend so much money on tickets, I want to be in there every minute I can.

And this is exactly why I said "personal preference"...because there are so many different scenarios! Some folks only get to WDW once every few years and others (DVCers for instance) are here all the time. But the point is you are on vacation...and while I don't advocate staying in bed til noon....15 minutes past rope drop isn't exactly a horrid experience. Might add 2 minutes on your wait time. OMG!! hahhahahaha ;)

Why do I do rope drop? Because my idea of an enjoyable day does not involve looking at the back of someone else's head in a line ofr more than a few minutes.

The OP might think we're crazy, but I think the exact same thing about them while I'm waltzing right by the hour long waits in standby on BTMRR or Space Mountain with my fastpass as I ride it for the fourth or fifth time that day, all with less than a five minute wait. :goodvibes

And when it's hot and you are standing in the uncovered queue for Dumbo for 45 minutes, I'm sitting in the cool shade by Aloha Isle and enjoying me a Dole whip because I rode Dumbo five hours ago when it was a walk-on. ;)

I certainly enjoy the fact that rope drop is NOT the popular thing to do. I'll just enjoy the mostly empty park with a few hundred or thousand more of my fellow nuts and then spend the afternoon people watching all the late risers sweat their way through yet another long line.... :thumbsup2

;);):thumbsup2

I think no one should go to rope drop. Please, please, do me a favor and sleep in. Thank you. ;)

My family thought I was crazy our first trip, until we did it, and then they hugged me in joy for how much better and more relaxing it made our vacation. It stresses me out to not do RD!!! :rotfl:

If you are going to the parks during a peak season such as Spring Break or the 4th of July, those first couple of hours the parks are open are golden. You can pretty much walk onto every ride, something that is not possible if you arrive at 10am.

A couple of years ago I did rope drop at MK during Spring Break. Actually it was even earlier than that, EMH, because every day that week was a morning EMH day at the Magic Kingdom. The first couple of hours I was able to do every ride that I wanted to without waiting. It was awesome! By 10am when I had to hop over to Epcot ( I was meeting someone) it was as if I was trying to swim upstream trying to leave the park. It was a huge wave of people entering the Magic Kingom as I was leaving. I can't imagine not having those morning hours and having to fight that crowd all day long to do anything. Yuck!

We used to feel the same way about RD as some here. No big deal, I'd rather sleep in, we don't go when it's really busy so we don't need to get up, etc. About 5 years ago we tried at RD and are hooked. We do them all now. If our goal that day is to complete the rides we can get more done in 2 hours than most people do all day. If we don't want to do any rides we will take our time getting to the park but we still arrive around RD. My kids get up all year and are out the door and at school well before RD begining time so it's not that big of a deal to get up at noraml time on vacation.

The average MK visitor gets to 8 attractions a day, we did that in under 2 hours at RD on Saturday and it was busy (a 9 supposedly on crowd calendars).

While I profess my love of being at the park at or near the rope drop, there is no right or wrong here. Everyone has their own way of vacationing and thankfully, for us early birds, most people like to sleep in while on vacation. All the better for me!

yup. I mean I don't get it you pay close to 80 bucks for a ticket and instead of enjoying the atmosphere, you spend your time trying to beat everyone to rides?

I do rope drop, and usually could be near the front of the line if I went over by the ropes as soon as I get there, but I hang back and let the crowds go ahead of me. I don't do a lot of rides, and I have never done any of the ones you're supposed to rush to at rope drop. Might do Test Track sometime, I dunno, but not even interested in doing any of the mountains in the Magic Kingdom or Soarin' or Toy Story Mania, etc.

My touring style is to try to catch the performers (Jack Sparrow Pirate Tutorial, Citizens of Hollywood), to admire the architecture and theming, and just to wander around soaking up the ambiance (I'm also trying to get better at using my camera so it's worth the effort to bring that along :p ).

First time I did rope drop at the MK, I watched the show and remained where I'd been sitting until the crowds thinned, then went looking for Lady and the Tramp's footprints in front of Tony's Town Square. Trust me, not fighting any crowds to get that done. ;)

2. Naturally a morning person and enjoy waking up in the parks.
3. Want to avoid crowds.
4. Want to do afternoon breaks (like naps at hotel for small children).

:thumbsup2

Yep. I'm never out in the morning at home, so I love that aspect, and hate crowds. I don't have any small children, but I hate heat and sun, so by noon I'm ready to take a break. My mother -- who has only done Disneyland in my dad's commando style -- cannot understand why I would like any Disney park, because to her they're all the things I hate; heat and sun and crowds and noise. Not the way I do them, they aren't. ;)

The only way you'll know what you've been missing is to make it to rope drop on your next trip.

After that one morning, you'll know if it's worth it to you or not and can plan the rest of your vacation accordingly.

Excellent advice. Rope drop isn't worth it for a lot of people -- people who get a buzz of of crowds and value talking to friends or making conversation with the other people while in line as part of the whole experience aren't going to value rope drop as high as people who just want to do the rides, and they aren't going to value it as much as people who get overwhelmed by too much human interaction. But they could end up valuing it for other reasons (being there in the cool of the day, having more time later to wander and chat, or for some reason few others appreciate); only way to know is to try.'

If you're someone who hates mornings, no matter what great things that morning holds, then trying it might be too high cost and isn't worth the effort. Or if the crowds and noise and line experience are very important to you, ditto -- you'd be risking something you know works for you for something that might not work at all. But if getting up for other stuff is no great hardship, and if the ruckus and heat are not a major part of the appeal, might as well give rope drop a shot. :)

yup. I mean I don't get it you pay close to 80 bucks for a ticket and instead of enjoying the atmosphere, you spend your time trying to beat everyone to rides? Not my idea of fun. I don't care if I'm first or last it's still the same ride. I'm not missing out on anything. The irony to me is that a lot of the people who rave and go on and on about getting there for rope drop go so often that does it matter if you don't ride a couple of things. :confused3:confused3

I guess that is my viewpoint. I know I'll be back so if I didn't get to ride or see something I will next time.

I don't see how you can spend $80 bucks and miss out on the opening show at MK. I ALWAYS tear up at it. My kids love it!:scared1:

thanks everyone for your input. I didn't know people felt so strongly about it. I think i will try to get to the MK rope drop this trip. My DD7 and I are morning people, sleeping in tu us is 7:00 am but my DW loves to sleep in on her days off. So it will be hard to convince her to get up early. Perhaps me and my DD7 will go early and she can catch up to us.
:yay:

I don't know how people can sleep in at wdw. I had my alarm set for 7 each morning but I was wide awake and totally spastic by 630. And I am not typically a "morning person" ;)
