Rooms for Cash

I know behind all the magic it's all about the money with WDW. My home is SSR but at seven months out I was hoping to get something at either BCV, BLT or WL and noticed that WDW is already offering them to the general public for cash. Is there something I'm missing here. Shouldn't the right thing to do is to see if a DVC member wants one at seven months out then whatever's left offer to the public for cash. Maybe there's something I don't understand here.

Disney has to keep 2-4% of the points at each resort for themselves. At the sold-out resorts they've likely got over 100,000 points to rent out each year.

Another reason cash rooms become available is a member uses points for something other than a DVC Resort Reservation or RCI Exchange. When a member uses their points for a Disney Cruise or non-DVC Disney Resort Reservation, DVC turns over a room to CRO to rent for cash. These rooms can't be pulled back by DVC since they are technically already booked on points.

Also there is all those members booking the member cruises, many who are using their points for at least one adult or as many guests as their points will cover.

DVC has been tracking member usage for non-DVC reservations for years, they have a good estimated figure on how many members will be using their points and how many will be booking via other collections. So they often open availability to DVC reservations in advance for rental through Disney CRO. Keep in mind when a member trades into DCL, it means that DCL expects to be paid cash for that reservation and DVC needs to rent a reservation(s) to pay for that cruise, the same is true for other Disney cash resorts. RCI is different because if a member trades into RCI an RCI member trades back into DVC.

When a member trades in a thousand points for Adv by Disney, they need to pay for that trip by selling DVC villas to make up the price.

Basically, Disney is a point owner too.
