Room Upgrades...a better chance

I also think it's random. We've had 3 upgrades - to preferred at CBR (booked through CRO), from standard to woods at WL (through AAA), and from standard to savannah at AKL (also through AAA).

OT... I have wondered if booking through Disney makes you more likely to get postcard or email offers. I called about a reservation last year, and they had changed my email address on file to my travel agents email! It had previously been correct, but I think it got changed when I made a reservation through AAA. I know it was just a mistake (they can't seem to keep our info straight ever!), but it does make me wonder if things like that keep us from getting codes.

Also, keep in mind, I've read plenty of times on here people BELIEVING they were upgraded and they actually weren't. Especially the deluxes, they have wonderful standard views - people assume they were upgraded - and then post it.

I'll pass on what a CM told me during our December trip, but for what it's worth I'm not buying it: We were at Poly and had requested a specific building & floor. At check-in, we asked about an upgrade. The CM said it would have been possible had we not already made specific requests on the reservation. He suggested upgrades are much more likely if there aren't other requests on the reservation. My opinion is it was just his nice way of saying no, but I thought I would pass it along.

We have only been upgraded once.... and that was in Nov at AKL from standard room to Savannah... it was very nice in that it was my DD 18th birthday trip!!!

We went Jan 3 - 6 and had booked through Dreams Unlimited. It was just DH and I and we had booked a Woods View at WL. It was also noted that it was my birthday and we had requested a king size bed. We checked around 1pm. We were upgraded to concierge. This was only our second trip and both trips have booked through a TA.

I'm thinking it is also just luck of the draw. (though it sure was a nice b-day treat:goodvibes )

Well that happened to me last month and when my family and I checked into the Polynesian the upgrade turned out to be true. Now we did not say anything about it at 1st and then the Cast Member in the Hawaii Longhouse said we were upgraded to a Lagoon View. So while I am sure you are correct in what you said, just remember sometimes when people find out they are upgraded before they leave it could also mean it will be true once they arrive.

I was hoping for an upgrade on our last trip a month ago, especially since I told them we were celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary. When I made the reservation directly through Disney, they were excited for us and asked for the specific date of the anniversary during our stay and said it had been noted. Well, there was no mention of our anniversary at all the entire trip, no upgrade, and in fact my parents sent a personalized anniversary card with Disney Dollars in it to us that never made it. We are still wondering what happened to it. I guess the moral of the story is to not get your hopes up for anything special and not to send money in the mail!

we stayed BWi standard room Sept 22-29...no upgrades but I was just extremely glad to get my king bed request! When she told me I had that I was soo excited I never thought to ask about an upgrade! Course next time we go I want to stay at WL...so maybe I will book standard and see what happens then. You never know...but I am also not counting on anything either.

Soooooooooooo, back to my original question... it sounds like nobody ask's for an upgrade, just wait to see if it happens?

I didn't get an upgrade on my first (and only so far) trip, nor did I ask for one. I just figured I'd acknowledge your question since it doesn't seem like anyone else did :confused3 !

It sounds like most people don't ask at the desk...I probably wouldn't (but I'm totally chicken when it comes to stuff like that!). I also believe I read here that room assignments are done several days prior to check-in so I'm guessing the CMs are limited in what they can do (they probably have some say..but not as much as say, the clerk behind the desk of the HoJo, etc.)

That being said, if your CM seems friendly and your chatting away with them...I'm sure it can't hurt to ask!

We've been upgraded before and it was for a trip we booked with a TA. I think it's totally random though.

I had the email thing happen to me to but fortunately it all worked out. My TA got a promotional email addressed to me at her email. She forwarded it to me and told me that she called Disney and had it changed back to my email. I called to double check and it had been changed. I will tell you what my TA said she thinks caused that. We had put a hold on a room for a discount that was out and were trying to decide if we wanted to go or not (it was wishful thinking when we held it). The last day of our hold my husband suggested that I just take the kids so I called and left my TA a message to do a deposit with my card # she had on file (kept on file at my request). She said when she got the message she was getting ready to leave for the evening and would be out late so she was rushing to do the deposit so the hold wouldn't drop off and we would lose the discount. According to her the payment screen has where you put the card billing address and then it has a field for email. That was supposed to be MY email but she was in a hurry so she put her email down instead of looking up mine. It ended up chainging the email in my profile. She apologized for that and even sent me a Disney picture frame to apologize. I was just pleased that she took the initiative to forward me the email and call to request they change it rather than just hitting delete. I never would have known if she hadn't done that.

Yes, we all know you were upgraded, that has nothing to do with what my post was about. I have read numerous reports of people believing they were given a complimentary upgraded (w/o being told - they just assume because their view is great). They assume they must have been upgraded - actually they weren't.

We were upgraded from GF garden view to Royal Palm Club recently. Needless to say it was a wonderful upgrade and has spoiled us forever! Now we only want to stay GF RPC!

When I asked why, I was told "it's just pixie dust"!

AS mentioned we have been upgrade several times, but never at CR, which is where most of our stays had been up until the renovations (family now dislikes the decor). I have asked about upgrades there (offering to pay difference) have always been told none avalable. Maybe this is the answer you're looking for?

We were upgraded upon arrival at AKL from a standard to savanna view. We did not ask for the upgrade, the CM just gave us our room number and we realized it was a savanna view room.

We were given an upgrade when we stayed at WL 2 yrs ago. Requested Standard and were given Woods view. We could see the castle throught the tree. and watch the fireworks every night!! Loved it!! I will not leave a room to chance, however. The last time I did that, we got stuck in the farthest building (Trinidad South??) away from the main building at CBR. It was a looong walk to the food court. Never again.
