Room requests--how and when

We are arriving on 12/30/2016 for our 8 day stay. Although we are DVC members, we are staying on a cash reservation, not associated with our DVC membership. How/when can we make room requests? I think I saw someone mention during the online check-in process?

Our TA had requests on our reservation. And I could see them online during check-in and make adjustments. Others have mentioned calling directly, during or after booking.

I've read to use the email form on the web site. We did this a few weeks ago for our stay next week. I did not get a response so we'll see how well it worked!
