Room recovery fee

Ive been on the boards about a year and half now, and have never heard of anyone actually having to pay the room recovery fee for smoking. Not any dis'ers anyway..Anyone ever heard of a situation where they actually enforced this?
(not that im planning on smoking or encouraging anyone to do it!!)

I can't say I have an anwer to your question, but I had to reply. If I were given a room that someone had smoked in prior to my stay I would be very upset. No amount of cleaning that can be done by mousekeeping in the few hours before a new guest checks in can get rid of the smell and traces of smoking in that room. Drapes, comforters would need to be washed, carpet cleaned etc.

If there is a no smoking rule, then guests should have enough respect not to smoke. Not only should there be a recovery fee, but if caught, the guests should be asked to leave. This may seem harsh, but it is a rule and shouldn't be broken.

We did meet someone in December when we were staying at CR who told us that he did in fact get hit with a $250 recovery fee during his stay there. He had norwalk virus that many were coming down with , DH included and we were sitting out on benches and chatting. With his being sick and confined to the resort for 3 days and then the recovery fee, he said he said it would be his first and last trip to Disney!

I am extremely allergic to tobacco smoke. I get an instant headache for days if I even walk thru an area that someone recently smoked in. I would throw such a fit they would need to charge them the recovery fee to recoup whatever they would need to make up for my ruined vacation.

I met one guy who almost got hit with a recovery fee. His wife told him he could smoke cigars on the balcony at AKL. A CM had asked him if anyone near his room was smoking, and it was shortly after this that I met him at the smoking section at AKL. He was baffled as to why he couldn't smoke on the balcony, so I enlightened him.

I still can't believe that his wife told him it was ok!

I smoke myself, and really don't get why anyone would smoke in the room when they know they can't. There are signs everywhere, and you do get the information on not smoking in the room when you check in. For me that's one of the nicest things about WDW - the non smoking restaurants and the non smoking resort rooms.

I have not been hit with the recovery fee, b/c I have never smoked in my room. However, if someone had not told me, I would not have thought much about smoking on a balcony. It is not in the room. I am bright enough to figure that if someone has their window open, the smoke would go inside. But I would think at the end of the building on the balcony (As in POP) I would have thought it would have been ok.

On our first trip to the world, my DS was 10, and I wanted to have a smoke at night, and did not want to leave my DS in the room alone to go to the smoking area. I t was late at night, and I wanted to have a smoke before bed, so i walked to the end of the building on the corner, and had a smoke on the balcony. I lit it and put it out asap cause I was worried it was not allowed even though I had seen another guest doing this. I then went and got my DS and went downstairs.

My DS now tells me those were some great moments sitting on the bench with me while we had our talks and i had my smoke. Go figure... BTW, my second trip I had quit so did not have to worry about that.

I am just saying, I would never think that the smoke would drift inside my unit and travel through the vents.

The people in the room next to DD's room at POP last September were smoking and the smoke was coming in through the vents in her room. They complained to the front desk, and they tried cleaning and spraying the room to get rid of the smell, but after a day, it was still there. The smoke was so bad, you could smell it every time you walked past their room. Unfortunately, there were no other rooms near us, so they were moved to another part of the building. We had a Grand Gathering and all of our rooms were together, but DD's room. They weren't too pleased about being separated from us, but Disney comped them one night even though it wasn't their fault. I thought that was good of them to offer that. Disney did say they were charging the people the $250 recovery fee.

Another thing to remember is that recovery fee can easily be charged AFTER the person has checked out. It's one of the reasons hotels ask for a credit card when you check in. In case of any damage they find after you check out.

Well Disney can still track you down I am sure - but you don't have to leave a credit card to stay in a Disney resort.

A friend of mine from work got hit with it...She was smoking in the bathroom at allstars and it went thru the vents and people complained. She claims she didn't know she couldn't I enlightened her

3) I probably wouldn't have known about it, but, the guest did a split stay.
4) They found the charge on their credit card and came back to complain.
5) And, boy, did he yell and complain and yell some more.
6) My (usually) mousy manager actually stood up for the billing.
7) And, the Housekeeping Manager didn't back down either.
8) The mgr asked if he saw the no-smoking sticker.
9) Guy said he didn't think WDW was serious, and then yelled some more.

We have an asthmatic child and smoke can put her in the hosital in no time flat, so any smoke coming in my vents/balcony ect, would be turned in instantly and so would the request to be moved as I agree it is very difficult to get the smell out. I just think my air quality shouldn't be lessened due to someone elses choices. I was very glad when Disney put the no smoking policy in place. the DSA's are for smoking we just steer clear of them.

A CM shared a story with us at POFQ, the Sassagoula Pizza guy took a pizza to a room, where the guy answered the door with a cigarette in his mouth, and a cloud of smoke behind him. The Pizza guy told him it was a non-smoking resort, and he was not allowed to smoke in the room. The guy blew smoke in his face. The CM says he was hit with the fee. HARD!

Well Disney can still track you down I am sure - but you don't have to leave a credit card to stay in a Disney resort.
Most hotels are now going in the direction of "you have to have a CC card put down at check-in." You can pay cash but this is for thier protection.

Sorry, but his guy is an idiot. Why did he think his room was NON SMOKING.

It sounds if he was in his room with the flu and needed to smoke. So it was for smoking.

I get puffy and stuffed up any where near smoking. My mom smokes (even with breast cancer) and yells at me that smokers have rights. I agree but I should not have to suffer becuase of her habit. Many smokers do not realize that the smoke gets on their clothes/ hair and is left on anything they touch.

My mother is a smoking, breast cancer survivor as well. I think its irresponsible and bizarre, but I love my mother so what can i do? Anyway, I can't walk into her kitchen without coming out of it reeking of smoke. I get SO ANGRY.

I feel she should have rights, to a point. As long as it does not involve the lives of those around her, she should be able to do whatever she wants to her body.

Smokers rights aside, I have rights too. We non-smokers have the right to not have cigarette smoke forced upon us. We know the consequences of secondhand smoke! Disney is right for enforcing this fine for people that smoke in the rooms.

If the recovery fee is $250, how did they hit him with $400? Just curious.

Whenever I see/smell a balcony or room smoker at WDW, I call the front desk and report them immediately. I bet many people do the same, for reasons already stated in other posts. So any smoker who thinks they can get away with it should think twice!

I've never heard of the recovery fee, but I am glad there is one. A few years ago at POFQ, we entered our room and it was obvious that the previous occupant smoked in the room. I called the front desk and asked if something could be done about it. They sent Mousekeeping and they cleaned/sprayed something in there. I am so glad I called, as I would not want Mousekeeping to think it was I who had caused the stink.

I'm a smoker... yeah, I know I seriously need to quit... But never have I thought to smoke in the room.
We usually stay at the values, and I find being able to walk to my room to a nearby smoking section is easy to do. I have young kids with me, and being able to sneak out for a smoke before bedtime works okay when there is a smoking section relatively close and I can be a short distance from the room, or able to see the room from the smoking section.

But... how does it work at deluxe resorts? Curious, as we are considering doing our last night at GF or CR or WL - are there any rooms that you can sneak away to have a smoke yet be fairly close to the room? a first floor with sliding door to exit that way and be near a smoking section, is that doable at any of the deluxes? I can understand then people smoking on the balconys, with it being tougher to get to a smoking area from the room - but still they shouldn't be smoking from the balconies.
