Room more expensive with package -- Does this make sense?

I recently booked 5 nights at the Poly. We were holding off on packages until we knew what dining plan we wanted. I called yesterday to add the dining and tickets. If I subtract the amount for the tickets (advertised on the Disney website) and the dining plan, the room would have come out to be $75 more a night than when we had the room only reservation. How/why could this be? Are rooms always more expensive with packages?

No, you never pay more than rack rate.

What are your dates, what kind of room, what kind of ticket? etc.??

I rarely find that packages work out to be a good deal when you really dissect them and do the math. They also often have extras thrown in that nobody really cares about. If I really need another Mickey picture frame, I will buy my own.

The package with tickets and dining is usually about $8 a day. Maybe insurance was added on too, which is $20. So 8x5=$40, plus the $20, plus more tax, comes out to $75.

With the package you get luggage tags, $15 for Planet Hollywood, a round of golf if you buy another round, 30 additional minutes if you purchase 60 on a searacer and the picture.

They may have added insurance to the adults in the package. You can have them remove it.
I had a room only and then changed to package to include tickets and dining last year..it came out to the penny what I thought it would be. Meaning just added in the price of tickets..plus the price of the dining per person.
Oh..we had two rooms..and I did notice a discrepancy on one of the reservations....and found that it was when they rebooked it they upgraded the room to include bunk beds(which was almost a $200.00 increase..this was at the WL)..and we didn't want them..and it wasn't in the room only quote. I called back and they fixed it.
So..I'd check to see if they added insurance, bunks to a room if you are staying WL or AKL or a more expensive view than you might have had with the room only. Shouldn't be costing you $75.00 more a night, if everything stayed the same with your resort and dates.;)

I have always found packages to be more expensive than individual bookings. I choose to book everything separate. It always comes out cheaper.

I believe with the dining option, they charge you full rack rate for the room to make it sound like you are getting a deal on the food when in actuality, they make up for it on the room. Many people like the dining option, but it's not for us. I don't like keeping track of points and like the freedom of dining where we want. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the dining option has it's benefits, but if they are charging you full rack for the room, I just don't see the savings. I did better with AP's and the DDE card. Look at ALL your options carefully before committing. They have some real tricky marketing strategies.
