Room Key Erased

During our 06 trip we kept having problems with our keys being erased. We would have to go back to the desk to have them re-activated. The CM said they may have been too close to a cell phone, so after the first time I tried to keep them away from each other. Does anyone else have this problem, has it gotten any better in the past 2 years?

We didn't have it happen, but when we checked in-they told us to keep the key away from cell phones AND digital cameras (something about the batteries..) My husband kept the keys in his wallet, and I kept the phone and camera in my very nerdy fanny pack.
:thumbsup2 Have a great trip!!

Me...:guilty: You would think I would have known better. I had a nice new bag from LL Bean..perfect size, carried it messenger style. It had a nifty pocket right under the flap that was perfect for my AP and room key. Well, I had to have my AP reissued at least three times in three days!! And my dd's as well since I carried hers with mine. When I got to AK I finally lost it...just went over the edge. My AP wouldn't work (yet again!!!) in the scanner. The CM politely asked me if I had carried it near any magnets, cell phones, cameras etc. No, of course not I told her. I know better, I'm not an idiot!!!! Yep, that's what I said..I'm more than embarrassed to admit. Anyway...as I, once again, approached Guest Services to get yet another AP, I remembered what was keeping my nice, new bag shut!! A huge magnet, on both the bag flap and the bag body!! Duh!! I was mortified. I did go back to the same CM and apologized profusely. Told her I was an idiot.
When I got home from that trip, I took an exacto knife and cut out the dang magnet...replaced it with some nice, non-offending Velcro!!!!
So, yes, it happens even to those of us with many trips under our belts!!

Disney's technology department strikes again.

They do a LOUSY job. Disney room keys must be treated like "gold" Do not allow them near a cell phone, near a credit card.

I fail to understand this.... I stay at hotels all the time. I throw the room key in the bottom of the purse with my cell phones and it works.. WHY can't Disney do this???? Because they don't want to perhaps????

While it has never happened to our room keys, I have had our credit cards deactivated while in my husband's eel skin wallet. We threw that wallet away and he now has a good old fashioned leather one.

Yes it happens to us sometimes and to our AP's as well....

. . . The CM said they may have been too close to a cell phone, so after the first time I tried to keep them away from each other . . .

1) That is what CM's were told to tell guests.
2) There is no validity in the comment.
3) Yes, powerful magnets can affect the card keys.
4) What will not affect them are
. . . cell phone proximity
. . . contact with other room keys or credit cards
. . . keeping in purse, pocket, or whatever.
5) There is a problem with the keys changed in Februar-2006 .
6) The info frequently get "scrambled".
7) WDW has not been able to solve the problem since they did key cost cutting.

NOTE: We even collected scrambled keys for weeks. There were 55-gallon drums upon drums of them for "study". However, they were destroyed. The first thought was poor imprinters. When they got the new ones, it did not help. So, instead of changing back to more expensive keys, they (and guests) must just put up with malfunctioning and then the reprinting. A simple question is, with the exception of a powerful magnet, when was the last time you had a credit card get scrambled?

I had this issue with my AP on my last trip--it was my first trip going to the parks on my own at all, and I would clip my AP and room key into my cell phone. For the last few days of my trip, though, my AP would scarcely work when I was trying to go into the parks, and the CMs told me to keep it away from my cell phone. Lesson learned!

Happens to me EVERY time.. and not just once but two or three times. Get the cell phone comment every time, too. :confused3

Happened to me three times before I realized that I had a money clip with magnet in my pocket. Room keys kept going bad. BUT the park passes---not on room key.....kept going bad as well. This was a consistent problem. Daily we had to go to guest services with a bad ticket. One was an AP. No explanation was given. CM's seemed to indicate that it was a regular problem. These tickets were not near any magnet or cell phone and in fact were in a protective case. EXTREMELY irritating.

Yep, happened to me too. In fact, one day I went to the concierge desk to get a new key and then I went right up the the room to test the new key and that one didn't work either! After that I went back down to get another new key, only to find out later that while they had successfully moved my room key and tickets onto the new KTW card, they had neglected to put our DDP on there. So it was back to the resort for a third new key that day.

It was still a wonderful trip though! :)

I actually had this happen to my annual pass, I had it in my purse but right next to my cell phone.... stupid me.

Same thing happened to me last trip. The perfect bag had a big magnet to keep it closed. I never thought of cutting it out though.
It was very frustrating to keep going back to guest services or back down to the lobby to get a new room key.

This is exactly what kept happening to my mother's card last summer. We finally made the magnet connection on day 3 of the trip. LOL

It's not just a Disney problem. We just stayed at the Four Seasons in Vegas and I had this happen to me twice. The front desk asked where I kept my keys, I told them it was stored in my cellphone case right next to my phone. They said that was probably the problem. Once I moved my keys it didn't happen again.
