Can anyone tell me if the handicapped rooms at POP are located on the first floor? Are there elevators in the hotel? Are handicapped rooms closer to the bus stops than other rooms? Also, I requested a handicapped room when I booked (through Orbitz) but I think I read something here about contacting the hotel 5 days ahead of my stay?
Thanks!
DonnaP

Did you get confirmation from Orbitz that you got a handicapped room? If you book through a TA or yourself they have guest services block out a handicapped room when you book.

I would have Orbitz check to make sure you have a handicapped room.

First there are two types of hanidicapped rooms. The first is comes with grabrails and the second comes with a roll in shower. Assuming you meant the latter, they are spread all over the resort and I do believe they are not restricted to the first floor as there are elevators.

If you do not need the roll in shower, but close proximity to the bus stop, a preferred room would be better and it only a little more expensive.

Call Orbitz to find out if they allocated you the type of handicap accessible room you need. Then everything else will be fine.

Thanks! I did request a handicapped room but there was a disclaimer which said that requests are considered, but not guaranteed. :confused3 I'll make a call & see what I can find out. Thanks again. :)

Check out the Disabilities board. If Sue doesn't know the answer, she'll be able to find it quickly for you.

I'm not Sue but I can answer and also post frequently on the Disabilities board. I see you have joined us there too ( welcome!). As was mentioned there are two types of accessible rooms. Either one needs to be blocked by Special Services at the time of booking, so you'd want to call Orbitz and be certain they know which type of room you need and that it's been blocked. A need for an accessible room isn't a request that is subject to availability such as view or location and thus is always gtd in advance. As was also mentioned they can be on any floor and in any building. If you have requested and paid for a preferred room then it will be closer to the food court/bus stop. Pop is very spread out and if you are in non-preferred it can be quite a hike to your room. I hope you enjoy your vacation. I see from your "name" that you're a Navy Mom. I'm a Navy Mom...but only to one. Congrats on having two in the Navy and may they remain safe.---Kathy

Sorry dclfun - "Sue" means all of you! You guys do a great job on the disabilities board.

Kathy, Thanks!
Ah, a kindred spirit. Where is your son / daughter stationed? My boys were both stationed at Norfolk, VA for a few years. The younger was discharged about a year and a half ago because of an non-combat injury. If he can get his arm rehabed enough, he wants to go into the Marines. My older son is currently stationed in San Diego - assigned to a carrier. He spent 6 months in the Middle East on a carrier, then another 8 months in Iraq. A LONG 8 months because he is a field medic and went to Iraq with a Marine unit. We're a blessed family because he came home safe & sound.

NavyMom...my son is on the USS Nimitz. Is yours there or on the Stennis? He, too, went to Iraq last year for 8 months and it was probably the longest 8 months of my life. I hope you got everything set with your ressie! As to the Disabilities board- Sue IS the best- she has answers and information for everything!---Kathy

Hey Kathy, my son is on the Nimitz too! (Small world!) He's only been in San Diego since the beginning of June. He had orders to go to Japan for 3 years, but the orders were changed, last minute almost, and he was transferred to SD for 3 years. Though Japan would have been a great experience, I'm grateful that he's in SD. He and his wife were just married in December, so heading to Japan would have been a huge adjustment for his wife when my son would be at sea. I just spoke to my son and his little step-daughter a few minutes ago and they are all enjoying SD. As a mom, it sure is great to know that the kiddos are happy.

It's all the people on disABILITIES that are the best>:thumbsup2

I saw this thread and came to answer, but you already have all the information you need.
There is some information about accessible rooms (including pictures that show the differences) on the disABILITIES FAQs thread (you can use the link in my signature to get there.)

Singing..."It's a Small World". To NavyMom- I hope you got to see the PBS series "Carrier". It was filmed on the Nimitz but during their first Iraq deployment. I figured my son should know some of the men and women featured on the mini-series though and at least I could see the "inside" of the Nimitz. If you ride on "Soarin" you'll see either the Nimitz or Stennis on the attraction film. Since I can't do this attraction I'll have to leave it up to one of my kids to look and see if it's the "68" vs. the # for the Stennis that's featured. My son went to Iraq the second time around and after seeing the PBS production I have even more respect for these "kids" and what they do.
Back to the topic...were you able to secure an accessible room gty for your vacation? I've never gone through Orbitz for a ressie so I'm not sure how special requests are handled when you book online through a wholesaler.---Kathy
