Room checks...romantic couples trip

We stayed at AKL in September in Jambo House - my husband and I were getting a late start that day and were still in the room about noon. We received a call from, I think, housekeeping who told us they saw the Room Occupied sign and asking if we wanted to set up a time for them to enter later.

Make your own sign to hang on the door- Out late, up early, now taking a nap! and put it on the door whenever you want private time. They will understand.

It doesn't work like that. They switched from "Do Not Disturb" to "Room Occupied" because the resort reserves the right to enter your room at any time for any reason. If they are there to do a room check, which is for security reasons, they will knock regardless of what the sign says.

well, we did this in the afternoons after we had Ok'd no mousekeeping and they never did knock or come in. You can do whatever you want, but we are going to do this same thing again. My guess is they came in later in the evening since we even left a sick one back one morning and nobody knocked or came in. And we only put the sign up for afternoon naps.

You can continue to do this if you want to, there's no harm in it. Just be aware that they still can (and may) knock and ask to enter, even with your sign out. It doesn't guarantee or prevent anything. Its effectively the same as the "Room Occupied" sign which is provided for you.

There's no way Disney can accommodate everyone's park schedule, nap schedule, private time, etc. Just put the latch on the door, and don't stress about it.

DVC didn't decide to do daily trash pickup out of the kindness of their heart. They did it to alleviate Disney's responsibility in a Las Vegas type situation. So don't be surprised if they show up during the time you have requested they not show up. They are doing daily checks to keep sex trafficking and other negative events out of the resorts.

There are so many variables at play in all these situations. I realize our personal experiences are all we can base advice from but these are such small sample sizes. If someone says, "I didn't have anyone knocking on our door during our 7 night trip so you'll be fine", it helps but is one room out of 1000's of rooms and one person out of 1000's of cleaning attendants. There are many ideas but no concrete ways to prevent any of this. Best you can do is put out your sign, use the lock chain and enjoy your trip.

I have spent some time trying to read up on options for dealing with room checks but I'm starting to get stressed out.

My husband and I will be at Kidani for 3 nights in September, renting points. We NEVER get time alone. I'm barely exaggerating here, we live in a very small house with 3 adult kids (youngest 18) and our room has a passthrough to one of the bedrooms, so privacy is a real issue. :scared:

So I'm so excited to have 3 uninterrupted days to spend with him but come to find out people will be knocking on our door and coming in whether we like it or not. I know it seems like such a small short thing, but I think because I have had to deal with being interrupted in my own home, it's really making me stress about if we come back mid day from the parks and want some alone time.

Should I request a certain time at the front desk? Will they even honor it? Has anyone dealt with this on a couple trip? I'm not shy about telling them directly why, if that will help! Lol, obviously since I'm posting on a public forum! :rolleyes1

Last time we were there, they weren't doing the checks, so I really have no clue how to deal but I might lose my mind if we lock the bar lock and they interrupt and try to open a door. o_O
We celebrated our 25th Anniversary in July at the Polynesian. The room check threads had me all stressed out because like you, we wanted privacy for our romantic vacation.

When all was said and done, mousekeeping cleaned our room every morning while we were in the parks. That served as our room check.

We had all of the privacy we wanted.

I can handle it if they can!

In all seriousness, it's never been a problem for us either.

Completely understand as we had a "romantic afternoon" rudely interrupted last March. Yes, the latch will prevent them from entering, but nothing will stop them from knocking and disturbing you. A natural reaction, no matter what mood you are enjoying, when you hear knocking at the door is to respond ... which can quickly ruin a mood. All because some idiot in the insurance or legal department thought this would be a good idea ... when it does NOTHING for security. Believe me, it didn't come from the security department or they'd be having actual security doing it instead of housekeeping and miscellaneous cast members. The real security knows that all it does is inconvenience guests.

You will get worlds of "no big deal" and "no issue" from the folks that think it's "security" and for those that haven't been impacted. And the truth is that the vast majority are NOT impacted, because it is done so haphazardly and depends so much on random timing. We've moved our stays to offsite because of it, but the lure is there to make exceptions in the future and return.

My best advice would be to go in as a pair with your heads set that you will hang the sign in hopes of avoiding a knock, latch the door so you won't get walked in on, and agree to completely ignore any knocking that might be heard ... above and beyond what knocking noises might arise from other activities :) Whatever they might be knocking for can wait ... whether it's an "inspection", to "change a light bulb", "empty trash", "maintenance", or any of the other excuses the various cast members that have to do this have come up with.

Good post!!

It's not an issue. Use the latch on the door.
Exactly 110% non issue— use the latch and you don’t have to let them in at all. They would just have to come back later on. We never use mousekeeping and once and a while we were there when someone knocked. We just said busy. They moved on. We usually aren’t there during a check as we open and close the parks most days. But no one is just coming in and no one can make you let them in. They can check sometime when you aren’t there. Never an issue.

You nailed it!

The point is the sign provided by Disney accomplishes the same exact thing.

and my point is everybody puts the Disney sign out and they often knock. Until I get a knock on my door, I will keep putting my sign out. Thanks.

This is fine, as long as you're aware that they can and will knock regardless of whatever sign is out there. They do not care how indisposed you are when they have a security related protocol they need to follow. At the end of the day, you're still a guest on their property.

Been over 25 times and twice since these started. I'm fine with it. It has worked for me. I will keep doing it. And hey, if they would happen to knock and interrupt something in my room, I have no qualms at all answering the door in whatever I am or am not wearing! pirate:
