Romance vs. True Love

This morning, on Regis and Kelly, there was a wedding and the minister said something that really struck me, "Romance can fade, but true love lasts forever". How true these words are. Having been married for almost 23 years, I realize that you do hit periods in the marriage where the romance seems to be gone. But when push comes to shove, something always happens that makes you realize that you couldn't have made it through the ordeal without your husband/wife by your side, and you are so glad they are.

My husband is not really a romantic. He has his moments and when he does, they are really good! LOL But he is an amazing man, the total opposite of me, but I think we compliment each other well.

So back to the romantic...last weekend, we went to a black tie dinner that Jim's company had purchased a table for. I bought a new dress in Orlando in January (50% off, woohoo!!) and he had bought a new suit earlier in the week. So we are late getting going and arrive in the room about 45 minutes before the reception (it's in the same hotel) and in our room is a tray of cheese, crackers, olives, fruit, chocolate covered strawberries and Jim brought a bottle of champagne. He's scoring big points now! So we snack a bit and have a couple of glasses of bubbly and figure that it was time to finish getting ready. As I am finishing up and putting my earrings on, Jim came in the vanity area and I saw his new suit for the first time and of course, he was gorgeous. :) He then tells me he has a little something for me, pulls out a little box wrapped in red with a bow and I am speechless (something that happens rarely). Inside are these BEAUTIFUL diamond earrings. Now I'm about to cry, they are gorgeous. So I ask how he pulled this off (after the hugging and kissing, of course) and he had been putting money aside for a long time because I take care of the bills and if he put it on a credit card, I would know. What a guy! It was probably one of the, if not THE most romantic thing he has every done. I was as touched by the idea that he did it, as much as I loved the earrings, if not more.

You will only get out of the marriage what you put into it. Remember that communication is the most importnat part of a marriage, romance is only a side benefit and can come in many forms. Sometimes it is the little things that mean the most.

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone.

OMG.. Jim you little devil you.. I loved that story CC... it gave me chills.. Happy Valentines to both of you..

Absolutely lovely post, Cathy. And I agree with every last word.

Hope you have a wonderful day followed by a wonderful weekend!

:) He's a keeper, all right. I love hearing that story again, thanks for the timely reminder, TS! :)

That is so sweet. What a beutiful thing he did, and the thought and effort is worth a million more than the earings. He is definitely a keeper.

Oh, Jim is a sweetheart! You're very lucky CC.:)

Happy Valentine's Day to you too.:) Do you have a pic of you in those earrings for us?:)

Oh my, my, my....what a beautiful story.

Happy Valentine's Day CC !!!!!

Very nice, Cathy, and so very true. Sounds almost like one of those 'diamonds are forver' commercials, which I think are so very well done.

Cathy....a wonderful post! :)

pssst....I'm think'in Jim's allowance could be alittle high :p

awwww - yeah CC - He's a keeper! Can we introduce him to Chris please???

That is so nice. I think it's better when they do things like that when they just want to and not because it's a day when they are supposed to :)

CC-can I borrow those diamonds sometime? ;)

Aww.....you've got to love them when they do something so special.

It reminds me of the time that my DH handed me a small box on Valentine's Day. I carefully unwrapped it, and inside was the "Buns of Steel" workout video.

Can Jim give Gary a call?????;) ;) ;)

Great post, CC! I think it's really good advise, and I will try to take it to heart in my relationship. Sounds like Jim is a keeper! ;)

Hey Jim is gonna make me look bad, I am not letting Ellen read this post ;) He is a great guy Cathy, thanks for the post and story, it made me smile :)

I'll have to agree with Patrick on this one. Thank goodness Sue doesn't read the DIS boards. I just hope that DD Sarah doesn't point this one out to her.

DW Sue often says that she loves me, but that she is not always "in love" with me. I guess that's another way of putting into words what you are describing.

Sounds like Jim is worth hanging on to. Have a great Valentines Day.

Shannon, actually I do on the digital and when I figure out how to put it in the computer... ;)

DD, sure anytime!!!

GP, you know I think I will give him a RAISE in his allowance! :p

Tony, when you and I can FINALLY arrange to meet, we will make sure we both have our guys with us!

JTB, ROFL!!!! No, for a change this one was royal blue! ;)

Elisabeth, I wish you all the joy and happiness in the world, you are such a sweetie, you deserve it!

Now, have to get ready to go to our favourite Thai restaurant for dinner.

Hope you all have a wonderful night!
