I read somewhere that rolling your clothes for packing gives you more room. Has anyone done this and does it really work?

When my cousin had to go overseas for the Air Force, they taught him smart packing techniques, one of which was rolling the clothes.

Perhaps you could take it a step further, and rubber band and then shrink wrap them!!!!!!! Realizing how much we pack, I should dig out the ol' Foodsaver.

I don't know about rolling them but I bought those space saver bags that you squeeze the air out of (made by Coleman in the camping section of stores) and I did not find they did much to make my clothing fit better. Maybe I was doing something wrong, but all it really did was make everything a wrinkled mess!!

I always roll my clothers, put them in a 2 gallon zip lock bag (or 1 gallon if shorts & top), zip the bag halfway, then squeeze all the air out and finish zipping the bag. Makes it easier to pack, outfits are already matched, it's easy to count outfits to make sure I have enough clothes, and if they inspect my bags at check in, it's easy for the inspectors to put all my stuff back. Only thing is be careful, because it also makes it easy to overpack, going over the weight limit for some airlines.

I always roll my clothes. It is amazing how much more you can pack in your case. Remember the rule - half the clothes twice the money. :)

Yup, We've rolled our clothes many times now & I'm always able to get more in! Although I always try to pack minimally to start with (not that that works mind you...)

When you roll your clothes, do you roll a few items together, or do you roll each item separetly? I usually lay out pants on the bottom of the suitcase without folding them so that the waist and bottom leg are hanging over the sides of the suitcase, then put shirts and everything else on top of the pants inside the case, and then flip the parts of the pants hanging out over the shirts. I saw this in a magazine once and it works well too, but if I can save more space with rolling, I'll try that.

Okay, I will try rolling this time. I am always looking for ways to improve packing as I am a serious overpacker. And if there are some wrinkles, I know POP has irons so, no big deal. We do not have a large car and with driving I am looking for ways to minimize but still bring everything we need.
