Does anyone roller skate for exercise? If so do you feel it has helped as far as losing a few pounds and inches or is it more of a cardio workout?

Roller skating is great exercise!

It can be a very effective cardio workout, but it will also help tone up your bottom and thighs. To get an even better toning workout, try to incorporate some larger side-to-side glides like you see those speed skaters do on TV.

Some of the best and most effective workouts are the ones that are "fun", that you enjoy for their own merits on top of just being good exercise.

Good luck!

pearlieq, Well said. One of the neighbors takes to the roller blades in one of the developments that I would walk with our dogs. She has such fun and if you can give yourself a change up in your workout it should keep you moving and there is a positive gain.

This is why I'm thinking about rollar skating :) !

I rollerblade over 4 miles a day in the summer (when it's not raining) and LOVE it! I have found it to be a fun way to get a good aerobic workout. I hope to someday do the WDW rollerblade marathon, but it's usually at the end of March, and it's hard to find somplace to workout indoors with blades in the middle of winter.

I feel that with blading I get a better workout than on skates, but it may just be b/c I'm going faster. :)

My DH bought me roller blades last week and I've done them religiously every day for the week. It's an exercise I look forward to doing. My development is approximately 3 miles and I can skate through it in under 30 minutes. I definitely feel it in my lower region and that's where I need it!

Go for it!!!

I personally find it easier...others may not.

It's easier to break (stop) with roller skates. I'm still getting used to the "stopping thing". I also think that until you get used to the blades, skates are easier to balance on.

With blades I feel you can glide more...go further with each stride and that your strides are smoother than that of the skates.

If you try it...just stick with it. It's quite awkward at first..but you'll certainly get used to it.

Amen to that! I'm in the same situation - can't rollerblade around here until May or so. Do you ice skate? I figured out the other day that 10 laps about 10 feet from the boards on an Olympic size ice rink (200x100) is approx. a mile. You need to add a lap or 2 for an NHL size rink. I've got my eye on In Line Marathon 2008.

Skating can be a GREAT and FUN workout! Skates or blades doesn't really matter - great for the butt and quads. To get the most out of it, think about your posture (shoulders back, head up, tummy in, blah, blah blah). For a really good butt lift: with each step, push off and then raise your free leg slightly behind you (just until you feel it). The "pretty" figure skating type stroke is actually a better toning work out than hunching over and moving your feet fast.

How do I know this? Well gosh darn it, I'm sk8ingmom!
