Has anyone used their Rogers Iphone at WDW? for Voice? for Data?

how does voice and data work/cost while at WDW using a canadian cell phone?

question is mostly for data usage and not so much for voice.

Data roaming is pretty expensive unless you buy a package in advance. I think it's something like $10/month from Rogers. Not sure if it includes text messaging but I think that's also $0.60/message (sending, receiving is free). Then if you want to make calls, those are expense too ... unless of course you get a roaming package

There's an option on the phone to turn off data roaming in case you decide to take your phone but don't want to use the data services. Settings>General>Network

i guess the main part of my question wasn't so much text messages but facebook & twitter and WDW apps that would access the 3G network. if my plan has 1gb of data usage a month, does updating facebook/twitter or whatever go towards that usage or would there be some sort of cost for using my phone in the US for data?

I would call Rogers to find out what the costs would be and if there are any plans available for your trip. As others have said, it can get very expensive as most likely your plan here in Canada doesn't include data roaming in the US.

Most data plans only cover you while you're in Canada. I'm pretty sure that to roam in the US, you'd need to add something onto your account in order to be
covered. You can still use WiFi and not get charged for data roaming. But I would turn off 3g access on your phone to be safe.

HTH!

You don't want to use 3G data while in the US. US data roaming is $10 per month plus $1 per MB. You could come home to a truly massive bill depending on what you do.

Like everyone else states, using your phone in the US is VERY costly. ALL telecos here in Canada are the same so don't feel like Rogers is giving it to you, they all practice the same punishing fees here. It's called a "joint monopoly". The problem here is they don't have any real competition on set prices together.

OK, enough of my rant :)

On a helpful note, we have used our phones in wi-fi mode before when in our hotels room if you want to update stuff when back "home".

Happy travels!

I used my iPhone for 11 days at WDW in April and the 3G service was great. As others have said the data and voice roaming are VERY expensive unless you use one of the Rogers US roaming packages. Their regular data roaming rate is $6/Mb, but if you add a $10/month package it drops to $1/Mb. You can add it for just one month and then remove it once you're back. Similarly you can add their US voice roaming package that gives you a pre-purchased set of US roaming minutes for a significantly discounted price from their regular roaming rates. Note that iPhone tethering and visual voice mail probably won't work in the US.

When I travel in the US, I turn my data roaming off.

Recently in LA, I would switch data roaming on periodically to look up directions, do some work emails etc, then turn it off again. My data roaming alone for simple things like that was $300.

There was an article in the Winnipeg Free Press, about a guy here who kept his roaming on and checked emails etc and his bill was $18000! My friend of mine also had a $10000 bill once when the iphone first came out and he didn't shut data roaming off. Be careful!!!!

Definately turn data off and keep voice calls to a minimum. We just came back and were billed $1.49 a minute for calls made from the states. Thankfully we only made a few very short calls.

As much as i would love to bring my iphone and use all the very cool WDW apps that you can get for it, I have decided to leave the iphone at home for our December vacation.

Thanks to everyone who responded
