I'm wondering if use month even matters when you can borrow and Bank points?

It matters mostly because of the banking deadline (4 months before the end of the use year). If you need to cancel in that timeframe, you will be unable to bank and have only a limited window to use the points with very little inventory left to book anywhere.

For example, if you have a March UY your banking deadline is end of October. If you have a Christmas reservation that you cancel in early November those points are not in a holding account, but you can't bank them and they will expire at the end of February. So March use year is better for Summer travel than Christmas travel. October use year is better for Christmas travel than for Summer travel.

UY also may matter if you might travel near the start of your UY as some people want to walk reservations, which does not really work if you walk over a UY.

Another important point is that if you stay over the beginning of a month it’s very hard—we like to visit around Thanksgiving, so we can’t do Dec use year because our trips extend from Nov-Dec. April would be tricky for those who go over spring break, etc.

Similar issue here with Memorial day weekend extending into June with my June use year. One of the reasons we also got March use year.

Could you provide an example? Even if you cancel the points don't just disappear correct? You would just have to use them during that use your period.

See my example in post 1142

Yes the points don't disappear, and are not necessarily in a holding account either. But you'd be the last 4 months of your use year, without ability to bank the points, and there is usually very little inventory left in DVC at 4 months out to plan anything reliably.

I have a March use year and went on a trip in Feb last year. Luckily all went well, but I was pretty terrified since we had two little kids in daycare and end up with every single stomach bug and sickness all year long! If we had to cancel our trip less than 30 days out the points would go into holding, but they would have expired two weeks later anyway. So NO WAY would I have been able to recoup them.
I want to travel in November and/or Feb to take advantage of a few long weekends in my kids school schedule, and possibly considering a NYE trip in the future. All are past my 10/31 banking deadline and many of these I wouldnt be able to reschedule so last minute with current DVC availability.
So, now I will have September points to use for Nov/Dec/Feb trips and my March points I can use if I travel in May/June/August.

@Chili327 curious why June would be better if they travel in August? Thought I understood use year, but maybe there's something I'm missing.... what would be the advantage of June vs August UY in this situation? Thank you.
Technically if your vacation NEVER started July 31st, you'd be ok, but often a Vacation in August can be nice to start a day or two earlier, & would cause major issues. Maybe i should have said safer, not better.

Here...

As long as you don't plan to overlap with July travel then it's great, because the use year starts August 1.

If you may overlap with July travel, it's about as bad as it can get.
This ^^

Say I decided that I wanted to go in October and have a Dec UY. Something happens in Aug, after my banking deadline and I have to cancel or change my trip….those points need to be used by November 30th.

Having only a few months to reschedule it, and it being a very busy DVC time, the likelihood of getting a room to even use the points would be pretty difficult….and could very well end up with lost points.

If the points were banked or borrowed, then I could not even ask MS for the one time exception for late banking they will sometimes do.

The closer to the start of a UY your trip is, the more flexibility and options you have to make sure you don’t have points at risk of being lost.

In that case Disney wouldn't just Bank them for you especially if you had an emergency and and you couldn't travel if that was the case
