They seem to have been available recently, so I'd certainly call MS and ask. (I'm sure the recent $50 price increase had nothing whatsoever to do with the sudden availability.. )

On a side note, is it still possible to get onto a waitlist for VGC direct?

I think it depends on your guide. We were on the waitlist twice last year. When the price increase was announced, our guide said that there was little hope that points would become available before the increase and suggested that we look into resale. We did and bought the contract listed for $160pp, - but it was not the same UY as all of our other points. Then the day of the price increase, our guide called and said they had the points available and that since they became available before the price increase but she was out of town they'd honor the price. We prefer having all of our points be in the same UY and membership number so we took them and decided to sell this contract. It worked out okay because we covered all of our costs from buying and selling this contract and we made a small profit to bring down the cost of the direct points closer to the resale price.
