Roethlisberger admits: 'I don't think I got in'

And that's the point. We did get over it. We got over it by the skin of our teeth to be the sixth seed in the AFC. We got over it by beating three higher seeded teams on their turf to get to the Super Bowl. And the sweetest revenge of all, we got over it to beat the Seahawks (the #1 seeded team in the NFL) to be World Champions. We got over it by making history.

SNIP

AND by setting how many records this year? We certainly did make history!

1. youngest QB to win a Superbowl
2. longest yards for TD in a Superbowl
3. 1st team to win 3 away games in the playoffs
4. the 1st time the 6th seat took the Championship

Did I miss any?

We I sit here knowing the game is over and there is nothing anybody can do. Nobody needs to tell anybody that.

I also know there are lots of people using terms like crybaby & whiner when they could be in the same position had a Colt kicker done his job. Oh, didn't you know, Tony didn't make that interception, just a figment of your imagination. That apology, just a PC move, the call was right, right?

Damn lucky it didn't matter, damn lucky. Don't forget it.

That is precisely what has kept me from calling anyone a crybaby or whiner. Been there, done that...will be there again.

I can understand people feeling cheated because they felt the calls were bad, but I would deal with it. I just don't like when people attack the Steelers or our city for it. (like Pittspuke)

Also, it wasn't just luck that it did not matter. It was hard work that made it not matter.

And until there is an official "we screwed up, there wa a bad call", there really is nothing to substantiate the calls as bad...too strict, yeah. but were they absolutely out of thin air and not legal calls? I don't think there is evidence of that.

...

There has not been one call that can be deemed wrong with any level of credible evidence. If anything, you can say they were too strict, but they didn't make up bogus rules and apply them. If the Seahawks cannot handle playing the game with calls that they feel are unfair, they will never win a Sb. I think they CAN and I think they will, just not this year. I think the fans are the ones who cannot handle it.

Ranks right up there with the continued going on about the Hawks, Seattle, and their fans. I was done until I saw that people have yet to move on and enjoy their win without talking about the other side.

I full expect my recent post to be added to the mix, that's fine, it will be lost in the shuffle once the thread takes on more pages of sore winner posts.

LOL, I think you have kept it to the game and not the team.

On another note, one thing that made me uncomfortable was the media favoring the Steelers beforehand. And many people thinking it would be an easy win. I always felt we should never underestimate them, they are a great team. Almost always the underdog, I am not too comfortable with them being called the favorites for any game. I think it is a dangerous place to be.

I hate how the media picks favorites like that. It's a big game and neither team was there because of luck.

I also did not think the Seahawks coach's comments were a big deal, maybe one of the few on my side who feel that way. If he would have trash talked the Steelers, that would be wrong (I really wouldn't expect that from him)...but I think the refs should have to hear it if their calls are being questioned.

A lot of people are saying "it's over so it doesnt' matter"
I completely disagree.
The Steelers get the Lombardi trophy and the Super Bowl rings. That can't and won't be changed.
HOWEVER what can change is the referee system in the NFL which has been flawed for a long time. A lot of Steeler fans feel their victory is being tarnished here but that's just the way it is. When 70% of football fans think that there are ref problems of this magnitude that is too much smoke for even the NFL to ignore.
An NFL referee is a part time employee. A lot of them are profesionals such as lawyers etc. They work a full week at their regular job, spend hours doing paperwork etc for the NFL and then on friday they hop on a plane to the game.
The average age of an NFL official is 52 and they go up to 65 years of age. As you get older your reflexes slow and your eyesight diminishes. I know some will howl age discrimination but that is a biological fact of life.
A first year official makes 35,000 dollar making him a PRIME target for gamblers etc.
There are many steps the league could take to improve the referee situation

1. Referee's should be full time employees, they should get intensive training during the off season and their schedule should follow football training camps etc to the end of the year

2. Their pay should be in line with Baseball umpires and Basketball referees

3. There should be a regular referee in the replay booth. He should look at the replay and make the call as he would have no vested interest. He should not be a member of the same referee team that is on the field but come from a seperate group.

I'm sure there are pleny of other good ideas out there. I'm sorry for the Steeler fans who feel their victory is tarnished. Most people agree the officiating in ALL the playoff games was horrible.
If it helps encourage the league to fix the system it will be worth it

I think those ideas are very reasonable Alex. I am wondering what sort of checks and balances are in place with refs? I mean, are their calls reviewed regularly and do THEY get fined heavily (or suspended or fired) for making bad calls? Anyone know?

And one thing that is a problem in any officiated game is the fact that some refs call it tight and some call it loose. It's just a fact of life that does make the fans frustrated when they see something called that is rarely called in other games. Not quite sure how that can be handled.

EVERY play is supposedly reviewed by a team after every game. What happens to the refs is never publicly revealed. Supposedly enough bad calls and they are out but nobody is really sure.

I think you have to notice the SHOCK everyone was in when the NFL admitted the Polamalu interception was a bad call. Obviously there are bad calls in every game but for the NFL to admit it surprised the heck out of everyone. I think that clearly shows how league feels about the situation.
Their motto is keep the mistakes quiet and nobody will notice and that is why this public outcry is so important

I know how! TRAINING!!! If they were full time employees you could run them through plays time after time after time. Would they get it perfect? No but consistency should improve a great deal. I think everyone understands they can't be perfect but they should get it right most of the time.

I think I hear evey baseball season about some team complaining about a bad umpire call. I dont think people complaining about refs/umps etc. is unique to the
super bowl.

Also, I am wondering based on polls who the majority of the nation wanted to win? I wonder if it was about 70 percent wanting the Seahawks to win over the Steelers? I am not a person who pays close attention to polls because they can be biased based on the wording of the question. To be clear, I am asking who the nation was wanting to win the superbowl not who they thought would win the super bowl based on the polls before the game?

i think many wanted the steelers to win, becasuse of the bus. Bettis is a wonderful player and seems to be more importantly a wonderful person. I think the superbowl has left a bad taste in everyones mouth. To many mistakes......people will be talking about it for sometime.

you dont feel that way cuz your a steelers fan
if you lived in seattle or were a hawks fan thats how you might feel. Also i base theh bad taste on news stories, polls and the such that over 70 % of people feel this way
im so sorry we dont agree and we are not going to change each others minds
but your from Pitt so its not like youa re ever gonna agree with anything anyone says against the steelers

Kelly,
The point I was trying to make. Just because YOU say it's tainted, doesn't make it so.
I've stayed out of the discussions about this until now, because I understand your being upset over the loss and I don't agree with people calling you whiners and telling you all to "get over it". If the Seattle fans truly believe the calls to be bad, they have a right to feel the way they do and I do emphatize with how they're feeling. If the shoe were on the other foot, we'd be feeling the same way.
But to say the win is tainted is really not being fair and it's not fair to the Steelers.

Its funny cause in alot of the things alex said in his posts have been stated by others and they have been called names, but not alex.
As the only one who directly responded to Alex's post, I would like to remind you that I have not called anyone here any names. If you have a problem with any posts, feel free to report it.

And he is right, it's how you say things. Alex kept it to the refs instead of making it personal about the team, the fans or the city.

I don't think anyone is against discussing how the officiating can be improved for the future.
