Rode Out The Earthquake At The DLH ...

The one we just had two nights ago was a 4.7, which is considered a "moderate" quake. The thing that makes a moderate quake seem stronger or could possibly cause it to do more damage is its location, and this one was located right in a heavily populated area of the L.A./South Bay area. If a 4.7 happens out in the desert somewhere, we wouldn't necessarily get so much jolting. We may not even feel it if we don't live in the desert. But this 4.7 was centered near Hawthorne, which is chock full of buildings and people, and is very close to the L.A. basin. That is why the shaking seemed to last so long and was so strong in some areas. Even after the quake technically stops moving the ground, the buildings keep shaking until they finally balance themselves. That is what happened in my building.

A 2.0 quake could happen in Beverly Hills and not be felt by a single soul 10 miles away, BUT if that 2.0 quake is centered right where you are living, you definitely feel it and may have damage. I have felt little 1.0 quakes where I live before - and believe me, the jolt is so strong but it is short because it is only a 1.0. It is like a little mini-jolt. I cannot imagine having a 4.7 right under where I live with that kind of strong jolting, but lasting longer. It would be terrifying.

But, I think, strangely, I would feel safer in Disneyland during a quake than probably in my own apartment. It is the people who would probably cause chaos. I trust that DLR has everything up to code and all the structures are as safe as they can be, and all the employees are professional.

If you were on a ride at the time of the quake, you probably did not know anything was happening as you are already in motion. Whenever there is an earthquake, some people always comment, "I was in my car. I missed it." Same concept if you were on a ride.

We were NOT on a ride, which is why we completely felt it.

...Even though the quake was minor, I was surprised the fireworks went on as planned. They could close the rides but its ok to shoot explosives up in the air when the ground is moving But since the fire dept has to clear the fireworks show every night, then I guess it was ok.

Completely different situations. The rides close after an earthquake so that they can be checked for safety and Disney is certain that they are safe for people to ride on again.

The fireworks show takes place out in the open, no tracks, mechanics, moving cars, ceilings, etc.... The fireworks show did not take place "when the ground was moving," but 40 minutes after.
