I used a 40% off coupon at hobby lobby today for a rock tumbler for my 9 year old for christmas. She loves rocks. She's constantly picking them up and and I find them in her pockets, in her backpack, everywhere!!

Anyone have any experience with these? Was this a good idea?

My daughter received one a couple of years ago. The one that she had had to tumble the rocks CONTINUOUSLY for 30 days. My husband hooked it up in the garage - have to say, it was so annoying - we were all waiting for the 30 days to be up! LOL The rocks did turn out pretty though............

Don't do it.

Something that's not mentioned on the box that should be is that it takes something like 30 to 40 days of tumbling to get the rocks to look like the ones in the box. We got one plugged it in for 3 days and couldn't take the noise anymore. We even had it churning in the garage. It's a waste of electricity and a waste of money.

My DH and I had both always wanted one when we were kids and bought one for DS for Christmas a couple years ago. After we read the directions, we took it back to the store. PP is right about it having to be plugged in and tumbling for weeks at a time. The potential safety risk, electricity use and constant noise of the tumbling outweighed the novelty of the pretty rocks.

Awww... I did not know this! I'll look at the directions and take it back if that's the case! No way I'm having it plugged in for a month! What a waste of electricity! Thanks everyone!

I got one of these for Christmas once as a kid and never even opened the box. I don't even know what happened to it, I think it disappeared after a few days. I bet my mom returned it to the store, lol.

My DD was dying for one when she was in the 5th grade. She got one for Christmas and used it once. It's still sitting in our garage.

She let the thing run LOUDLY day and night for a week. when she looked at the rocks they were hardly different. She proclaimed it junk and never even finished opening up the rest of the packets!

I'd say TAKE IT BACK! We got sick of the thing running ALL the time and I was afraid it was a fire hazard to let it run continuously like that.

Just my .02.

My son (who is now 26 and in the Marines) got one from his uncle for Christmas when he was about 6.
It was BATTERY OPERATED! We ran through a big pack of C batteries before I told him to forget it. Imagine 30 days on full battery power. No rock is worth that much unless I get a diamond when I am done. Even then with the cost of batteries I don't think so.

Not worth it. Waaaayyyyyyy too long to wait, makes terrible noise, kids don't have patience like this to wait, no matyer what age really. They lose interest in the final product. (at least I did at age 30 ish!) . It was disappointing for my twins, age 7 or 8 at the time. They did this once, and then in the closet the thing went.

Honestly, I got it/kit with a 40% off coupon at AC Moore, and it was a waste of money...you have to tumble for hours and hours and hours and hour, you get the idea...it just brought frustration, sorry!

I had one when I was about 10. Tried it once.

It would have taken years! I threw it out later.

Sad to say that we had the same experience as all others here. On day 2 it moved to the garage and on day 4 it was unplugged. Still sitting on shelf in the garage. Great idea, but unfortunately the reality is just too much. :sad2:

ok, we did it. We put it in a cooler in the garage and my DH keep up with it.

It took a whole month

It made pretty rocks (cat's eye ect):)

It took a whole month

I have no ideal where those pretty rocks are.:rolleyes1

It cost another $10 to do second batch of rocks
plus another month!

Did we do another batch, nope!!

Wow, there is so much negativity about a fun, educational item. No, you do not have instant gratification with rock tumbling--you are simulating in 4-8 weeks what nature takes tens of thousands of years to do.

This isn't an item for kids that can't wait to see results. I can see a level of impatience with many children. It is noisy at first. Also, if you are buying the "toy" kit you may not get the results you want.

We live in a state with many gem mines and love to do the sluices along the road side. We have a nice double barrel Thumler's Tumbler and love to do rocks. It takes time. There are multiple stages of grit tumbling, starting with course grit and working to fine, polishing beads. Each stage takes 10 days to 2 weeks, occasionally a stage needs to be repeated. You must put rocks of like hardness in the barrel in order to get good results. We have tumbled emerald and aquamarine and gotten some beautiful polished specimens. It took around 3 months to do these since they are so hard. We also tried to polish a round of sapphires and rubies, but got nothing since the stones were too hard to tumble with the grit we had.

We keep the tumbler in the garage. It makes some noise--the barrels are rubber and it muffles the sound. The earlier stages where the rocks have jagged edges are louder. The tumbler is designed to run weeks at a time so it isn't a fire hazard--you don't unplug your refrigerator do you? We don't see any changes in our electric bill either.

I do not recommend the "toy" models like you purchased. Because so many people will get tumblers and lose interest, your best bet is to look for the Tumler's Tumblers on ebay and purchase the grit packs and stones separately. The polished stones can make some lovely wire-wrapped jewelry, but you can purchase tumbled stones if your child can't wait. I can see this being an item that just won't hold a young child's attention for a long time since it takes weeks/months for results. Honestly, if she hasn't asked for the tumbler, I would return the toy model, but look for a used better tumbler if she expresses an interest. Good luck. (And I find rocks in my husband's pockets all the time. ;))

My problem was, we went through the first stage and then we were supposed to do the next stage of powder or whatever and we couldn't get the first layer of 'grit' out of the machine for anything!

My standard comment about rock tumblers is to get them for the kids of people you don't like. They are loud, messy and take forever. My neice had one and I was ready to yank the cord within 2 hours.

I would return it, take the money, and buy assorted beads that she can string together to make stuff. Using the weekly coupons from Michael's and JoAnn's a few years ago, I got a huge bead assortment for my granddaughter for Christmas a few years ago.

Oh, I had one - I was 10, yes it was educational, but not so educational that I would want to listen to those rock ever, ever again.
