As always , I always turn to these boards for help. as I have no clue..
and I know you guys are a great wealth of info..

I am now shopping for combined birthdays and xmas gifts...so the above 2 things were selected.

if they have none of the above.. (I have seen both come in big boxes!!...)
which do you prefer and why ?? and what are the price differnces ..

do they both play on WII and PS3 , if so, which do you prefer and why?

Definitely buy whichever for the PS3 and not the Wii. As far as the game choice most people seem to prefer Rock Band, but I would suggest looking at the song lists for each game and choose based on that.

ETA: I don't think there's any price difference either between systems or games.

Since you asked why...the PS3 is a no brainer as you can get more songs, the Wii version is still lagging behind. Plus storage of the songs is much easier on the PS3.

I personally prefer the way RB plays and so do most people on the thread in my siggy, but they are pretty similar so song choice is more important.

I don't know how much help I'll be, as none of us have this for the Wii or PS3.

Of all of our friends who have these games (all are Xbox360 users), only 1 family got Rock Band. Everybody else got Guitor Hero. The family who originally got RB, kept it for a year, then took it to GameStop and traded it in and got GH.

When we go to Best Buy, they have both games set up for you to try and we almost never see anyone on the RB one, but there is always someone on the GH one and there is usually another party watching them play it or waiting to play it. We haven't been to Best Buy since the Beatles version of RB came out, so I don't know if that one is getting more use or not.

My kids have played on both styles while at Best Buy, as well as at our friends houses. The 12 and 14 year old, both say that they like GH better than RB.

lol! Everyone I know is the opposite. Too funny!

We're Rock Band fans! We only have a Wii and we like it just fine. I do know PS and XBox have better online options etc. but we do okay with the Wii. It is mucho fun!

I have to tell you we have both for the xbox 360 and Rockband gets played 90% of the time. Both of my kids prefer Rockband. The weekends are usually a huge rock concert at my house.

My husband and I just got Rock Band for our PS3 and we LOVE it. We are so addicted.

Whichever one you end up buying I would go with the PS3 format. If you do that the drums and guitar are compatiable with Rock Band and Guitar Hero. If you bought it for the Wii you would have to buy seperate drums/guitars for each game.

Last week we rented the Guitar Hero World Tour game from the video store. After playing that for awhile we were very happy we bought Rock Band over Guitar Hero.

Do you know what kind of music they like? That could influence your decision. For instance, The Beatles are available exclusively in Rock Band.
Might be worth looking into which songs/bands are in each format.:)

I have both, and greatly prefer Rock Band. I play it often and almost never play GH:WT. But as harleyquinn already mentioned, the track list is really the most important aspect. Keep in mind if you get Rock Band and later get RB2 you can pay a small fee to import most of the RB songs to your hard drive for use in RB2. (At least I assume you can on the PS3; you can on the 360.)

If you decide to go with Guitar Hero World Tour instead, keep in mind that Guitar Hero 5 also uses all the instruments if you want that one at some point.

I also agree that the ps3 would be better than the Wii. There is much more downloadable content available for the 360 and ps3 than for the Wii. Plus, the graphics tend to be better on the ps3 and 360 than on the Wii.

We have Rock Band 2 for the Xbox 360 and Live, so I can't comment on which console is the better bet for you, but can concur that harleyquinn's reasons for choosing it for the PS3 are sound and that's probably the one I'd buy it for.

Rock Band has it all. You get the guitars, vocals (if you use them, we don't), and drums. I honestly see no benefit to buying GH over RB except for the song lists. There are however more than enough songs for RB that I'd find that to be a very weak argument anymore. The only other reason I can think of where one might prefer GH to RB would be if you have a lot of friends using 1 more than the other. That certainly wouldn't make GH the better choice as far as quality goes though.

I really think it's a no brainer, but that's just MOO.

I agree. It really doesn't make any sense why someone would choose GH over RB, even at Best Buy. Pick up the guitar for RB only and you get the same experience with RB that you get with GH, PLUS, you have the option of playing the other instruments/vocals if you want to (but that's certainly not required).

Although the earlier Guitar Hero games did only use guitar and bass guitar, Guitar Hero: World Tour and Guitar Hero 5 both use guitar, bass guitar, vocals and drums. In fact, GH5 uses any combination of instruments, so for the first time you can have two vocalists and 2 drummers and no guitars, or three lead guitars, or lots of other combinations. I still prefer Rock Band, but now that you can play all the instruments on both Rock Band and Guitar Hero that's one less factor to consider when trying to choose between the two. The track list and gameplay is still different enough to matter, though.

I have RB2 and I love it. Don't buy guitar hero:rock band edition. I barely play guitar hero metallica, and I love metallica. So definitely go with the original band game, RB. And if anyone has a ps3 and rock band 2 you should add me and we can play, UWjumpaound.

We have GH:WT for Wii. I did not care for the game play on WT, so we sold it once we beat it, but really like the game play in GH5. You get bonuses for working together as a band, so it's a challenge to communicate and play.

You can use the GH instruments to play RB2 and Beatles RB.

Right now, the RB song lists are a little more "user friendly". GH5 is still a little rock heavy. But I'm looking forward to both Band Hero and Lego RB - the song lists include a lot more pop music and things lots of people know.
