I'm planning my first drive to Florida and have figured out a basic itinerary that avoids I-95 as much as possible, to stay away from the D.C. mess as well as the G-8 Summit taking place in Georgia the week of our trip. I also have to make a stop in Gainesville, so I-75 seems like a better route. Since I have no experience in this region, I'd greatly appreciate any feedback on feasibility of driving the lengths I'm considering as well as suggestions for hotels and food along the way. I'll be the only driver, with two children and my mother riding along. At this time the plan is:
Day One: Cortland, NY to Wytheville, VA via Route 81 (I'd go further if it's feasible)
Day Two: Wytheville to Macon or Valdosta, GA via 77, 85, and 75
Day Three: to Gainesville
I plan to take 95 on the return trip at the end of summer to visit Fort Sumter and Manassas (the Civil War tour, I suppose!). I'd love to hear any tips regarding that route as well.
Thanks a lot!
