I just returned from a week at Disney world. We attended the MVMCP on 12/12/06. As my DW and I rode Thunder Railroad my disabled MIL watched our DD and rode her on her electric scooter. She went in the store at Splash Mountain to let our DD look around. We had our princess backpack attached to the basket on the front of the scooter. My dd was showing my MIL something she liked and when she looked back the backpack was gone. She immedently contacted a CM and they contacted security. My DW and I in the mean time had finished riding the ride and asked to use the phone to cancil our credit cards and cell phone since my DW purse and phone was in the back pack. The CM at the store refused to let us use there phone and directed us to the payphones outside the bathrooms at Splash Mountain. While we were franticly calling banks and cell phone company. A CM supervisor comes up and asks what has happened. We tell him the story and he asks us if we like for him to call security and file a report. YESSSSSSSSSSSS we tell him. Ten minitues later a female CM supervisor shows up with our back pack and says she found it in the ladies bathroom in a stall with the shoulder strap cut.The thief had stolen the cash out of my DW wallet as well as a gift card she had recieved at work for Christmas. Luckly they did not get any identification, credit cards, cell phone, cameria or a Disney visa reward card with $140 on it. We ended up losing $150 in the deal, but it could have been worse. I guess the moral of the story is that mean heartless people vist Disney as well and prey on us nice Disney lovers. We filed a report when security finally came by 45 minutues later. Disney was not much help at all. Please watch your valuables at all times.

I am sorry that happened to you. Nothing like a thief to mess up a family vacation. I am glad you were not sufferers of identity theft.

I hear ya. I've heard of people getting cameras stolen and such. You wouldn't think you'd have to worry about this kind of thing at Disney World, but I suppose thieves take vacations too.

Sorry that happened to you, but good thing it wasn't worse...

And this is the perfect time of the year just for this type of thing.

It's sad just soso sad.

Some one must have seen it happen and just were caught up in there own vacation to relise what was happening for it to be cut off like that.

After being robbed, and not being allowed to use the gift-shop phone, There would have been several complaints made by my fam. Loudly, and publicly. This would A) warn others to not allow themselves to be victimized, and B) cause a little bit of deserved negative attention. I wonder if the media (local newspapers etc... )would be interested to hear about the lack of support/ help... :furious:

I'm so sorry that happened to you but I'm glad you got most things back. :goodvibes

Your experience just shows why the only thing I leave in a backpack and/or stroller, are non-valuable items (blankets, sodas, extra clothes, etc.). It may be a pain to carry a purse, and 2 cameras on every ride, but I don't want to have your same experience.

Again, glad to hear most things were recovered and I hope the rest of your trip was "magical"

I saw a Discovery special that showed them using hooked knives that is used for carpeting and they can slice straps and make off with a bag so fast, no one would notice, even if they were looking in the general direction. They probably think they are shooting fish in a barrel when they are at any amusement park.

So much for the security checks at park entrance.

My MIL said she only saw three CM'S in the store with her at the time of the robbery. She could not be sure there was not anyone else in the store, but two of the CM'S she said disappeared for about 20 mins. Agin no way to prove anything but it does sound fishy.

These things are small enough to carry in your pockets. Security only checks bags.

I am very glad to hear you retrieved most everything. But at any place, it is always good to have items of value on your person. Theives have been known to steal items right beside people at grocery stores. Leaving any item unattended is very risky.
Recently at AK a friend said his new hat was stolen while he was snapping a photo -- and his hat was right beside him.

I have to ask....are you saying that the CMs in the shop may have been somehow involved in the theft? That would really be upsetting. If this is the case I would think you might want to look into it further.

Contact your CC company. The thief could have written down numbers and expiration dates of your cards.

Sorry this happend. I guess they don't have cameras in the stores. I'm sure even if they did they wouldn't show them to anybody. If they are that helpfull not letting you us the phone.

I am so sorry this happened to you. Since nothing but cash and gift cards were taken it sounds like it was prob a teen or a quick theif...not that it makes it right by any means. i would guess that you are safe but I would keep an eye on your accounts for a good while. We have been victims of Identity theft before so I keep a close eye on my account anyway.

I hate that Disney was not much help. I am glad that it wasn't any worse than it was though.

What confuses me is why we need to worry at WDW? :guilty: I always figured people pay so much money already to have a fabulous WDW vacation, WHY O WHY do they then need to steal once they get to the Parks. :confused3

WHO IS DOING THIS.... :confused3 .... :guilty:

ETA...I am sorry you had to have this happened to you, OP and your family while at the most magical place ever. :sad2:

I hate to think it, but do you think not so nice people planning to steal might purchase a ticket and enter the parks just to steal?

I'm sorry this happened to you, but I'm glad it was minimal damage (well, $150 isn't MINIMAL, but when you think of what could have been taken . . .)

I TOTALLY agree with this--better safe than sorry later.
