For those that have gone to Europe. Do you turn on data roaming or keep it off?

Im from Europe and turn off data roaming when I am in America. I use the free WIFI in hotels, restaurants, Disneyland etc.

In Europe free WIFI is a lot more common than in America. I use WhatsApp to keep in contact with family, both text chat and video chat. IMO there is no need for the expense of roaming when the free WIFI is so accessible.

When I needed my phone for work I found it easiest to buy a SIM card or burner type phone overseas and push- forward that’s the word!- calls to the other number.
For personal use I just switch to WhatsAp or have long calls sent to friends/family landline type phones. I never had a need for international plans to date.

I keep my main US phone on airplane mode the entire time, only connecting to WiFi. I then carry a second iPhone 14 with me in which I swap out the SIM card to a local provider's plan and then have local calling, text, and data. It's MUCH cheaper than trying to work with your US carrier's international plan (which will be super $$) and then I get a local phone number for when I'm out and about. I've used this system for years and it works well.

I have swapped out my physical SIM card in the past but find it’s even cheaper to use an eSIM. Colleagues have told me that Verizon (AT&T?) wants something like $10/day with an international plan, whereas I usually get all the data that I need for a week for about the same price.

I spent 2 weeks in Europe in September. I paid for a month international plan from Verizon for $88. I think I had to turn roaming on.
